About PYEC & the Junior Ranger Program

Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Education Committee Aboriginal Corporation (PYEC) is an Anangu-led organisation supporting education in the APY Lands. PYEC works closely with the South Australian Department for Education and runs programs to enhance education, cultural identity, and employment pathways for Anangu youth.

The Junior Ranger Program is an innovative new initiative trialing in two APY Lands sites. The program promotes connection to cultural knowledge and land management practices, supporting young Anangu to enhance their wellbeing, educational achievement, and employment opportunities. It prioritises Anangu governance, community-led education, and hands-on, on-country learning experiences.

About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated Program Coordinator to lead the development and implementation of the Junior Ranger Program across the APY/Maralinga Tjarutja Lands. The successful candidate will oversee a small team of Anangu Cultural Leads and Program Support Workers, working closely with traditional owners, rangers, land management teams, schools, and community leaders to deliver culturally meaningful, hands-on learning experiences.

The Program Coordinator will also collaborate with schools and the Department for Education to ensure that on-country learning experiences contribute to SACE and VET achievement.

Reporting to the Operations Manager, this role will:

  • Lead and coordinate the delivery of the Junior Ranger Program.
  • Develop strong relationships with Anangu communities, traditional owners, and stakeholders.
  • Support Anangu Cultural Leads and Program Support Workers to deliver Anangu-led teaching and learning experiences.
  • Manage program logistics, including budgeting, administration, and reporting.
  • Work collaboratively with schools and educators to integrate land management knowledge with formal education pathways.
  • Travel across the APY Lands and be open to living in remote communities for extended periods.
About You

To be successful in this role, you will:

  • Have experience working with young Aboriginal people in remote communities (education, youth work, or training context).
  • Be able to work respectfully and effectively with Indigenous communities.
  • Have developed strong leadership, mentorship, and communication skills.
  • Be able to handle program logistics, including budgeting and administration.
  • Have knowledge of Aboriginal culture and land management practices.
  • Have the ability to support young people under stress (individually or in group settings).
  • Hold a valid ‘C’ class driver’s licence.
  • Hold a positive Working With Children Check, and National Criminal History Check (or be able to obtain)

Desirable Criteria

  • Knowledge of Anangu culture and the APY Lands' environmental context.
  • Ability to speak Pitjantjatjara.
  • Experience working in land management, ranger programs, or Indigenous Protected Areas (IPAs).
  • Experience delivering projects, initiatives, or education programs in remote Aboriginal communities.
  • Relevant First Aid certifications (HLTAID011, HLTAID009, HLTAID013, Mental Health First Aid).

Why Join Us?

  • Meaningful work empowering Anangu youth and strengthening cultural identity.
  • Opportunity to work on country with Anangu leaders and land management experts.
  • Be part of an innovative program at the intersection of culture, education, and employment.
  • Competitive salary and remote work incentives.
