I would also like to incorporate you into other days as we go along as we are getting busier. The hours will increase. If you are studying at uni or something like that, it won't work because I'm looking at getting someone to in that can move to working more days.
Now for the boring stuff
The job
I'm looking for my first sales person! I've always hired people for the role that are more admin focussed. However now that the admin side is running smooth I'd like to get someone that has a more sales focussed history.
This role might be a breath of fresh air for someone who has been in sales for a while and is sick of always trying to get commissions. Instead I offer a higher hourly rate.
I don't want my customers to feel pressured when they come in, so I don't offer a sales commission. However to the person who gets the job they will go onto a more long term commission structure, one that is based on the entire company sales for the week. And that will be paid out weekly. I find this creates a more relaxed work environment, and a more positive sales experience. There is no pressure to make a sale.
The is however pressure to demonstrate the product, and email quotes. The solution I have come up with destroys all anxieties around mattress purchases. I build it in the same you sell it. So they can see us making it before they walk upstairs to the showroom.
This makes the selling part very easy. On top of that, most people that come in have been told by a friend or they've read about the solution on forums etc. They are already very warm leads.
Other weird stuff
There is no sales, discounts, offers or anything like that. You simply have to give the customer confidence that we will be there should anything go wrong. Things do go wrong, but with my system we are able to solve any issue immediately for the customer.
The sales process
A customer will come in and I have a 1 minute spiel, that you will have to learn. Part of this is getting them hands on with the materials. Unzipping the mattress getting them to feel the materials. This helps them understand the materials.
Then you explain the firmness rating system Pretty simple. After that you leave them alone until they need help.
When they need help you explain to them the adjustment process, everyone has anxiety about what happens if the mattress isn't comfy. You explain that in any event they can return the mattress for 9 months, or we can adjust the thing forever. These things are very compelling.
What I'm looking for is for someone to be able to explain these concepts to every customer that comes in.
Once that is done and they start getting nervous, you save them by saying, "if you like, I can pop the model you'd like in an email so you can go and think about it".
Then they will either just say screw it lets just get it done, and they will purchase, or they will go with a quote. They are able to pay through the email for these quotes so this part is central to the strategy. Get quotes.
Sometimes they say they don't want a quote and we mark the model they want on a form for them to take away.
That's basically how the sales process goes.
However it's a mattress joint so obviously we don't have 50 people rocking up to the shop everyday.
Other stuff you'll do
Just do the things that pop up, whatever it may be, help customers, smile be nice and helpful, this is sales, but it's also it's service.
So what exactly pops up in a mattress factory to do?
We are a different kind of mattress place, I created this business modelled on what I learnt as a chef, always be ready, always be prepared. You could say we are prepped and ready to deal with peoples sleep problems instead of hunger problems. Turns out, non of my competitors done there mise en place.
I have this system where we can drive out and optimise peoples sleep through my component system. Very often, that's what we are doing. People like this service, we are helping them. When one of these people tell you that you've made their pain go away, it's a good feeling.
People are either buying the system (mattress) or calling up and getting adjustments.
No other business does this.
What you will do
People call and want to arrange swaps of components (firmness swaps) so they can sleep better, you'll help them, booking it in etc'
Random phone calls from marketers which you will need to hang up on them.
Helping customers in the showroom, showing them the component system, getting quotes and stuff.
You will ask for the address, and take some notes down and schedule the delivery (pin an invoice to the pinboard)
I will be there the majority of the time so if you have 3 braincells you'll be fine, it's not rocket science. I've only got about 3. Common sense will be valuable here.
It's pretty straightforward stuff, I've got great processes and it's very organised. It's a well oiled machine.
Bonuses, tl;dr - I have incentives for you to stay, the pay keeps going up
The bonus will begin when you reach a level where you have taken full responsibility for your role and I can see you are the right fit. Probably 3 months ish I'll be able to know.
The bonus structure is paid out every week based on the sales figures for the week. You see it immediately. It's a commission, but it's not a per sale commission. It's based on the total sales of the company. For example, when the bonus starts, it might be 20-30 bucks a day, in 2 years it might be 50-80 bucks a day, (but I don't know as it's tied to revenue). I'll give you this spreadsheet and I'll stick to the agreement. It's important to know where the job is going and I will provide that agreement.
It's a business alignment bonus. If everyones getting more money when the business is busier, everyones happy when it's busy, good vibes.
The future
The business is growing, if it works out between us, your knowledge here will become more valuable the longer you stay and your bonuses will increase.
About the environment
Working in a mattress shop can sound boring, however ausbeds has a slight difference. We make them in the same building as we sell them. This makes the environment quite dynamic. There's always something going on. Someone's sewing, we do our own marketing, so we might be doing videos etc, we're assembling, making, delivering, it's a moving environment. I never know what's going to happen next. Also, it's in a pretty cool nook of Marrickville, 30 seconds walk from Messina ice creams massive factory/shop, and near factory theatre. Heaps of awesome food around here, nice sangas
A bit more about my company, or, what we do at ausbeds (we basically make buying a mattress not suck)
Mattress shopping has some pretty terrible issues. Like, what if it's uncomfy later, in a few weeks or months, what if it sags etc. These problems are the reason people are terrified of mattress shopping. They don't know if it's the right choice and it's super expensive..
Ausbeds is about solving these pain points. The system I have made allows us to deal with any problem the customer can throw at us. It's for this reason, people seem to resonate with what we do, search through our reviews to see this, heaps on productreview.com.au, and google reviews.
One problem with serving the public can be that there can be disagreements and customers can get angry. Because of the system I have built, the customer has no opportunity to get angry. We always have a calm way of solving any customer issues. This is something that I really enjoy about ausbeds, I was a chef before starting ausbeds and it was the polar opposite of this. It could be quite a stressful environment.
I much prefer the pace of ausbeds, and the customers are always (99% of the time) lovely!
This job is somewhat unique in that people purchase on site, we make them in the same building, and we deliver them straight away. For this reason it can be quite rewarding taking someone through the process of choosing, to the mattress to be delivered in their bedroom, sometimes in less than 24hours.
Good things about working here
Everyone likes a calm working environment. That's how I run ausbeds. I keep the pressure at a minimum, I think if everyone's relaxed it will bleed through to the customer. Starting at 10 is a good thing also. The area around ausbeds is fantastic for cafes, bars, food. Loads of stuff around here.
I suggest you look at our youtube vids, insta vids. Have a look at what we are doing here. If it resonates with you, and you want to be part of it.
