About Us

Started in the late 1960s by Alan McCulloch, Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery has a strong legacy as a supporter of contemporary Australian art, a legacy that continues today through our exhibition program and permanent collection holdings. The Gallery presents approximately 12 exhibitions a year, including self-generated curatorial exhibitions, touring exhibitions, local artist exhibitions and collection-based exhibitions. The Gallery has a substantial collection of predominantly works on paper. Every two years, we host one of the oldest acquisitive prizes in Australia, the National Works on Paper. Our mission is to connect to local, state, national and international audiences and take part in national discourses on art and cultural value for the future. We do this in one of the most spectacular settings in Victoria, the Mornington Peninsula.

A destination in its own right, the region is characterised by unique townships, high quality produce, world renowned landscapes, tourist regions and areas of national and international conservation significance. It also boasts an active arts community.

One hour from Melbourne CBD, the Gallery operates under the Mornington Peninsula Shire, which is responsible for a broad range of infrastructure and community services that support the wellbeing and prosperity of our diverse community. With approximately 900 employees, it is a busy and vibrant workplace.

About Mornington Peninsula Shire

Mornington, VIC, Australia

The Mornington Peninsula is located just over an hour’s drive away from the city, on Melbourne’s ‘doorstep’, and is often described as Melbourne’s playground. It is the most popular informal recreation area in Victoria.

The peninsula is a 720 square kilometre boot-shaped promontory separating two contrasting bays: Port Phillip and Western Port. ‘The Peninsula’, as it is affectionately known to local residents, contains a diversity of scenic landscapes and is almost surrounded by the sea, with coastal boundaries of over 190 kilometres, a total of approximately 10 per cent of Victoria’s coastline. It is a mixture of urban areas, resort towns, tourist development and rural land.
