The Role:
We are seeking a motivated and experienced Lawyer to join our Legal and Inspectorate teams. Under the supervision of our Legal Counsel, you will play a key role in preparing and conducting criminal prosecutions under the Animal Welfare Act 1985. This is a unique opportunity to apply your legal expertise while making a tangible impact on animal welfare in South Australia.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct summary prosecutions on behalf of RSPCA SA, including legal research, drafting court documents, appearing in courts, and briefing external barristers when required.
Work closely with volunteers, interns, and the Inspectorate team to achieve KPIs and prosecution targets.
Assist in formulating, reviewing, and implementing policies, procedures, and processes.
Support Legal Counsel with presentations, public speaking, and other operational activities.
Maintain accurate records and ensure timely completion of prosecution briefs.
Undertake additional duties as requested by the CEO, Chief Inspector, or Legal Counsel.
About You:
Holds a Law degree with a current, unrestricted practicing certificate with at least 2 years practical experience
Experienced in criminal litigation and advocacy and court appearances
Skilled in reviewing briefs of evidence, assessing prospects of conviction, and providing technical legal advice under supervision.
Knowledgeable about legislation, procedures, and the Animal Welfare Act 1985 (highly desirable).
Strong team player, capable of working collaboratively while taking direction from team leaders.
Excellent planning, organisational, and communication skills.

Requirements:
Current Class C driver’s licence.
Federal Police background check.
Willingness to travel intra-state as required.
