About the role

This is a full-time Ranger Coordinator role with the Wirrawandi Aboriginal Corporation (WAC) in Karratha, Western Australia. Reporting to the Ranger Manager, you will be responsible for coordinating and leading a team of dedicated rangers to maintain and protect the natural environment within the local area. This is a crucial role that contributes to the overall objectives of the organisation in preserving the rich cultural and ecological heritage of the region.

What you'll do

Implement a work plan by overseeing and coordinating the day-to-day activities of the ranger team including day, overnight and multi-day camping trips

Provide mentoring and arrange training opportunities for rangers

Collection of accurate records of field activities including reports and data collection.

Working alongside the Ranger Manager to develop projects and workplans

Assist in developing and managing the budgets

Support application for additional funding sources to expand the ranger program

Work closely with Elders and knowledge holders

Liaise with local authorities, community groups and other stakeholders to collaborate on environmental initiatives

Maintain detailed records and provide regular reporting on the status of the parks and wildlife

Participate in the planning and delivery of community engagement activities to promote environmental awareness

Provide training, guidance and mentorship to the ranger team to build their skills and capabilities

Essential Criteria

Strong people skills and an ability to adapt to a cross-cultural environment

Understanding and knowledge of Indigenous social and cultural challenges

Strong team management and logistical skills with excellent organisational skillset

Current Australian Open driver's license

A passion for protecting the natural environment and a commitment to making a positive impact

Competence in using Microsoft 365 applications

Willingness to travel and comfortable with being in a remote setting including camping in a swag for up to few days at a time

Desirable Criteria

Strong knowledge of local flora, fauna and ecosystems

Relevant qualifications or experience in environmental science, natural resource management, anthropology or a related discipline

Experience operating a 4wd vehicle in remote areas

Strong project management skills

Experience working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Island peoples

Experience with state and federally funded grants

Competence using GIS/Mapping software
