The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced BESS Electrical Engineer to join our client's engineering team on an initial 12 month contract. This critical role will lead the design of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) projects from ideation through to operation. This office-based position in Brisbane or Sydney offers the opportunity to work on a significant portfolio of major infrastructure projects at various stages of development.
As a BESS Electrical Engineer, you will be responsible for providing comprehensive engineering support throughout all project phases, from concept design and feasibility through to procurement, construction, and commissioning. This role offers the chance to work on cutting-edge energy storage technology while collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver innovative renewable energy solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
Engineering, Procurement and Construction Support
- Review detailed design documentation including single line diagrams, switchgear, bills of materials, functional design specifications, sizing calculations, general arrangement drawings, cable schedules, and earthing layouts
- Provide engineering support for BESS projects, ensuring alignment with technical specifications, contract requirements, and stakeholder coordination
- Collaborate with procurement and commercial contract teams to ensure delivery of projects to agreed technical specifications, evaluate vendor proposals, and select suitable technologies and equipment
- Ensure all designs comply with Australian Standards, industry best practices, and regulatory requirements
- Provide hands-on engineering support during project execution, including site visits, troubleshooting, and technical oversight for successful commissioning
Project Development Support
- Develop concept and feasibility sizing, specifications and selection of BESS and Balance of Plant (BOP) equipment
- Develop designs and concept engineering for connection of systems to the national electricity market, working with grid team to understand key requirements of high voltage network connection
- Work closely with Development Managers, engineers and suppliers to review design inputs, schedule planning, progress reporting and technical query resolution
- Work with procurement to develop technical specifications, evaluate vendor proposals, and select suitable technologies and equipment
Pipeline Development Support
- Work with the development and broader engineering team to identify high value BESS site opportunities
- Stay current with emerging BESS technologies, industry standards, and regulatory developments; share knowledge to support organisational learning and innovation
Health, Safety, Environment and Quality (HSEQ)
- Conduct work in a safe and environmentally responsible manner
- Comply with relevant legislation including Workplace Health and Safety Act and Environmental Protection Act
- Comply with site-specific WH&S policies and procedures and Environmental Authorities
- Take responsibility for the health and safety of yourself and others when carrying out duties
About You
Essential Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field (master's degree preferred)
- Minimum 3 years of professional experience in electrical engineering with at least 2 years focused on BESS
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications
- Strong understanding of energy storage technologies including lithium-ion batteries
- Strong understanding of the Australian Renewable Energy industry and operation of the National Energy Market
- High level diagnostic and analytical ability in working with complex systems
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate within a multi-disciplinary team
Desirable:
- Prior experience in technical due diligence, owner's engineering, advisory services, and feasibility studies for renewable energy projects and/or energy storage systems
- Preferred proficiency in PVsyst, PVcase, PowerCAD, PSCAD, and PSSE or other similar modelling software
- Strong knowledge of BESS technologies, grid integration, and power system modelling
- Familiarity with relevant standards (such as IEC, IEEE, AS/NZS) and understanding of safety, grid compliance, and regulatory requirements for energy storage assets
