Details: Applications are sought to fill the position of Senior Director / Deputy Registrar, where you will play a key leadership role in the delivery of judicial and registry services across the ACT Courts and Tribunal.

Under the limited direction of the Executive Director, Legal (Magistrates Court), you will:

  • Exercise statutory and delegated judicial powers across the Magistrates Court, Industrial Court, Family Violence Court, Coroner’s Court and Children’s Court.
  • Provide high-level legal and policy advice on matters relating to court practice, legislation, and the administration of justice.
  • Lead and develop staff capability across registry and legal functions to support efficient and consistent court operations.

Through these activities, the Senior Director / Deputy Registrar has responsibility for ensuring that the jurisdiction of the Courts is exercised effectively and that the delivery of court services is of the highest professional and ethical standard. The role also requires strong engagement with judicial officers, legal practitioners, government agencies and community stakeholders.

The Senior Director / Deputy Registrar will demonstrate:

  • Extensive experience in providing complex legal and policy advice within a justice or court environment.
  • High-level understanding of ACT and Commonwealth legislation and the jurisdiction of the Registrar.
  • Strong leadership, management and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build capability and foster a collaborative and respectful workplace culture.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and analytical skills, with sound judgment and attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to manage competing priorities, deliver quality outcomes under pressure and contribute strategically to the overall objectives of the Courts and Tribunal.

Eligibility/Other requirements:

Mandatory qualifications

  • This position requires a degree in laws of an Australian tertiary institution, or a comparable overseas qualification, which, in the opinion of the Chief Executive Officer and Principal Registrar, is appropriate to the duties of the office.
  • This position requires admission as a legal practitioner, however described, of the High Court or the Supreme Court of an Australian State or Territory.
