About the opportunity
The School of Engineering is looking for a skilled and experienced leader in Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering. This person will help create new research and teaching programs focused on using engineering to tackle climate change. They will lead efforts in Climate Safe engineering, which involves innovating designs and systems that reduce emissions and help communities deal with natural disasters.
The ideal candidate will have strong leadership and communication skills and will help guide the school’s future direction. They will also help raise its reputation in Australia and around the world for Climate Safe engineering, which is a pioneering new thematic focus for the School of Engineering at UTAS .
The role requires deep knowledge in one of the following areas: Electrical Engineering (Power Systems, Electronics, or Control Systems) Mechanical Engineering (Design, Manufacturing, or Thermo-Fluids) Civil Engineering (Structural, Geotechnical, or Water Resources)
The successful applicant will combine technical expertise with an understanding of social needs to create engineering solutions that support a safer climate.
What you’ll do:
- Make a substantial and sustained contribution to the University in achieving its strategic objectives and fulfilling its operational responsibilities.
- Undertake high-quality research of international standing, secure external competitive and other funding, publish research findings and successfully supervise research higher degree students to completion.
- Undertake scholarly undergraduate (and if relevant postgraduate) coursework teaching of an exemplary quality.
- Provide academic leadership, particularly in building teams and fostering outstanding research and/or learning and teaching, and increasingly in supporting the career development of more junior staff.
- Lead initiatives in teaching and research that deliver successful Climate Safe outcomes
What we’re looking for:
- A substantial record in, and continuing commitment to, research that has achieved international recognition and made innovative, and sustained contributions to the field of climate focussed Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, demonstrated by a very strong record of high-quality publications, presentations at conferences and success in securing external competitive and other funding.
- A substantial record of successful research higher degree student supervision and completions.
- Extensive experience and demonstrated achievement in university-level teaching and learning.
- Proven ability as an academic leader.
- A demonstrated capacity to build and maintain effective and productive links locally, nationally and internationally with the discipline, profession, industry (where relevant) and wider community.
- An awareness of commercial and financial aspects of professional engineering, including the value of research and application of new knowledge in industry.
Salary details
Appointment to this role will be at Academic Level D and will have a total remuneration package of up to $210,621 comprising base salary within the range of $166,014 to $180,018 plus 17% superannuation. Relocation package (including visa sponsorship) available for the ideal candidate.
