This is your chance to build a meaningful career through our culturally supportive, full-time, two-year paid traineeship, designed to equip you with the skills and qualifications needed to promote health and wellbeing within Aboriginal communities.

As an Aboriginal Health Promotion Trainee (AHPT), you will work closely with the Health Promotion Service (HPS) to develop, implement, and evaluate culturally responsive health programs that address health inequities. You will gain hands-on experience in evidence-based program development focused on key areas such as healthy weight, smoking and vaping harm reduction, chronic disease prevention, and mental health promotion.

Throughout the traineeship, you will:

Eligibility criteria: To apply, you must:

Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.

Be aged 16 years or older.

Be committed to attending TAFE one day per week to complete a Certificate III.

Be available to work 38 hours per week.

No prior experience is required, just a willingness to learn and grow.

What You'll be Doing
This position is available through the SWSLHD Aboriginal Traineeship Program (ATP). The incumbent of this position will be employed on a two-year contract as a SWSLHD Adult Trainee - Aboriginal Trainee- Aboriginal Health Promotion Trainee. As part of the ATP, the Trainee must undertake a recognised health-related qualification, relevant to the position undertaken with a Training Organisation (RTO).

The aim of the traineeship position is to develop skills to be able to plan, implement, and evaluate culturally responsive programs to improve health outcomes and address healthy inequities for Aboriginal communities in South Western Sydney. The position will provide SWSLHD with a skilled and capable Aboriginal Population Health Worker at the completion of the traineeship.

Throughout the traineeship, the trainee will participate in the development, implementation, evaluation and dissemination of evidence-based health promotion strategies and programs. Key focus areas include but are not limited to promoting healthy weight, reducing smoking and vaping related harm, reducing rates of preventable chronic disease and strengthening protective factors for mental health in Aboriginal communities.

Willingness and ability to complete a Certificate III in Aboriginal Primary Health Care.

Willingness to develop knowledge and skills in planning, implementing and evaluating evidence-based health promotion initiatives.

Willingness to establish and maintain partnerships with other staff and government, non-government and community organisations. Including working in community-based settings with Aboriginal communities.

Good written and verbal communication skills and computer literacy. Effective interpersonal skills, problem solving skills and personal resilience.
