Breathing Space is a world first and unique residential program for men who choose to use violence in their relationships. Backed by over 20 years of community involvement, the program stands as a testament to long-term commitment and care in the metropolitan area.

This is your opportunity to step into a role where you can make a significant contribution to keeping women and children safe by being at the forefront of innovative men’s behaviour change interventions.

Are you ready to step into a role that supports keeping women and children safe? Why not apply to join our Hedland Breathing Space site.

The Role

The program is delivered in a secure and supportive therapeutic setting and provides psychoeducational group work, counselling, case management and advocacy. This approach supports victim survivors, including children, to remain in their homes and in connection with their support networks, to maximise their safety.

The Behaviour Change Support Worker (BCSW) position is a rewarding opportunity to make a difference in Communicare’s Breathing Space Men’s Behaviour Change (MBC) Program.

In this role your key responsibilities will include:

Supporting men to develop and maintain safe and healthy relationships.

Contributing to risk assessments, safety planning, and case notes.

Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

Maintaining strong interpersonal skills and a calm, compassionate approach to client engagement, including the ability to respond effectively to individuals experiencing crisis or emotional distress.

The service operates 24/7, and the BCSW working patterns will include evening, sleep shifts, and weekend working. Rosters are based on business needs and subject to change. The successful candidate must be flexible and able to adapt to a fast-paced environment. Specific shift times will be discussed during the interview process.

About You

You are passionate about keeping women and children safe from family domestic violence, coupled with a desire to help men change their behaviours through education around Domestic and family Violence and Abuse (FDVA). You will also have:

Tertiary qualification in the human services field, and/or significant experience in family and domestic violence and abuse.

Experienced in de-escalation skills, crisis support and willingness to assist with program understanding.

Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

Ability to identify and respond to challenging behaviours and manage crisis situations.

Ability to engage with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, culturally and linguistically diverse populations, and people with disabilities.

Unrestricted driver's licence, Police clearance, Working With Children Check or willing to obtain, and willingness to obtain a Department of Justice integrity clearance if required.

What we can offer you

Professional Development: Opportunities for growth and development within a supportive and inclusive team culture.

Opportunity to make positive change in the FDVA sector, keeping women and children safe.

Flexible working arrangements

Health and Wellbeing: Discounted Health Insurance with HBF, free confidential counselling services through our Employee Assistance Program, and an annual Flu Vaccination Program.

Support for FDVA: Family Domestic Violence and Abuse leave, financial assistance, and structured support for any employees who have experienced FDVA incidents.
