About you
You are a self-starter who thrives on organisation, initiative, and connection. You work confidently and independently while building strong relationships with members, committees, and stakeholders. You combine strong administrative capability with strategic insight and are equally comfortable handling detailed operational tasks and contributing to high-level planning.
You have a proven track record in the association or not-for-profit sector, ideally within healthcare, and value accuracy, integrity, and collaboration in everything you do.
The Position
We are seeking an experienced and capable Business Manager to provide strategic and operational leadership for SPANZA — a professional, not-for-profit organisation bringing together clinicians, researchers, and educators committed to advancing paediatric anaesthesia across Australasia.
This full-time role is responsible for leading the day-to-day operations of the Society. This is both a high level and hands on role, where you manage the admin and strategic tasks of the association.
The Business Manager leads and manages administration, finance, governance, membership, and communications — ensuring the organisation runs efficiently and continues to grow sustainably.
The Business Manager reports to the Director of Will Organise in conjunction with the President and Executive Committee of SPANZA and plays a vital role in connecting the Society’s strategic priorities with its operational outcomes.
Key responsibilities include:
Providing support to the President, Executive Committee and subcommittees, including preparation of papers, minute taking, and policy implementation
Financial management, reporting, and compliance (including bookkeeping and liaison with Auditor)
Managing membership systems, communications, newsletters, and website updates (with support from the coordinator)
Leading continuous improvement across systems, processes, and member engagement
Supporting the development and implementation of SPANZA’s strategic and business plans
Liaising with key stakeholders, government entities, and partner organisations
Managing governance requirements, including ACNC, ASIC compliance and Executive administration
Leading and supporting staff to ensure operational objectives are achieved
You will need to demonstrate:
Extensive management, governance and risk experience
Experience in reporting to boards and coordinating professional meetings
Experience in leading teams and project coordination
The ability to act with autonomy with limited direction, to undertake a range of tasks with minimal direct supervision and within time constraints – proactivity in this role is key
The ability to plan, document, implement and monitor activities designed to improve efficiency and output
Excellent written and oral communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to manage conflicting priorities
Exceptional organisational skills, including managing multiple priorities and deadlines
Key selection criteria
Business/General manager experience required
Strong administrative background, comfortable working across all levels of activity
Highly developed written and verbal communication skills
Strong negotiation and stakeholder management skills
Analytical mindset and commitment to evolving systems and practices
High-level computer literacy (MS Office Suite, Xero/QuickBooks; ability to learn new systems quickly)
Sound financial management and budgeting experience
Understanding of regulatory compliance and constitutional governance
Availability for regular meetings outside normal business hours and travel throughout the year to face to face meetings
Dependable, trustworthy, and able to maintain confidentiality
Eligibility to work in Australia (sponsorship not available)
Desirable Requirements
Experience and knowledge of iMIS
Previous experience within a professional member-based association or not-for-profit
Familiarity with medical or scientific terminology
Benefits when working for us
Contribute to a respected and collegial professional society making a real difference to children’s health outcomes across Australia and New Zealand
Work with passionate clinicians and administrators dedicated to education, collaboration, and clinical excellence
Flexible working arrangements and supportive team culture
Competitive salary with performance-based bonus scheme and annual incremental increases
Genuine autonomy, professional variety, and purpose in your work
Performance based bonus scheme
Up to 10% of base salary, paid annually, after performance review by Will Organise and the Executive Committee and linked to KPIs.
