The Organisation

The Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) is the voice for Australia’s ocean. We are Australia’s leading ocean conservation organisation and one of the founding members of Australia’s conservation movement.

We are a community of ocean lovers across the nation, working to protect our precious marine wildlife and secure healthy seas. As an independent charity, our team of expert advocates and campaigners work daily to safeguard Australia’s ocean and coasts.

Our Strategic Plan 2026–2030 sets out five goals: driving climate action for the ocean, protecting threatened species and habitats, safeguarding critical places, building support for our ocean, and strengthening AMCS as an effective and sustainable organisation.

Location: Flexible remote working options considered within Australia, with hybrid arrangements supported in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane CBDs.

Hours: Part-time, 3–4 days per week (0.6–0.8 FTE)

Salary: AMCS Salary Classification Guide Level 5, aligned with the Level 5 Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010. Salary circa $100,000-$105-000per annum/$51.00 per hour (pro rata for part-time), plus superannuation.

Contract Period: Permanent, ongoing role.

The Role

The Human Resources Business Partner (HRBP) plays a key role in strengthening AMCS as a values-driven, compliant and high-performing organisation.

Reporting to the Operations Director, the HRBP provides professional and timely HR advice, supports workforce planning and ensures systems, policies and processes operate effectively across the organisation. The role partners closely with managers and staff to promote consistency, compliance and engagement throughout the employee lifecycle.

This position manages AMCS’ HR systems (Employment Hero), supports recruitment, onboarding, pay and Award application, and contributes to initiatives that build capability and wellbeing across the organisation.

Reports to: Operations Director (Matrix reporting to HR Strategy Advisor)

Travel

The role requires minimal travel within Australia, on a need’s basis.

Key Responsibilities

HR Systems and Compliance
Maintain and optimise Employment Hero (EH) to ensure complete, accurate and compliant workforce data. Prepare regular workforce reporting for the Leadership Team and manage audit processes. Partner with managers to ensure they are using the platform to conduct HR transactions with staff appropriately.

Recruitment and Onboarding
Coordinate end-to-end recruitment, ensuring transparent and timely processes. Deliver high-quality onboarding experiences for new staff and ensure all new starters complete induction and mandatory training.

Employee Records and Contract Management
Prepare and maintain employment contracts, variations and records in line with legislative and policy requirements. Conduct regular HR file audits and follow up on corrective actions.

Policy, Governance and Compliance Advice and Support
Support the review and implementation of HR policies, provide advice and support on Award interpretation and ensure compliance with relevant employment legislation.

Time, Pay and Award Application
Partner with the Finance team (payroll) to ensure accurate application of the SCHADS Award, timely pay processing and proactive management of classification or pay issues.

Engagement, Performance and Development
Support AMCS’ performance review, probation and staff engagement processes. Coordinate surveys and collate feedback to inform continuous improvement.

Partnering and Coaching
Provide practical advice to managers on HR matters. Identify emerging HR risks and assist with effective resolution.

Eligibility

Right to work in Australia (citizen, permanent resident, or valid work visa).

Willingness to travel nationally and occasionally internationally.

Selection Criteria

Human Resources Knowledge and Experience
Minimum of three years’ HR generalist experience, ideally in the not-for-profit or social purpose sector. Strong understanding of the SCHADS Award and HRIS systems.

Systems and Process Management
Demonstrated experience managing and steering HRIS platforms (preferably, but not exclusively, Employment Hero).

Recruitment and Onboarding
Proven ability to coordinate (in partnership with hiring managers) efficient and inclusive recruitment processes and deliver excellent onboarding experiences.

Partnering and Advice
Strong interpersonal and advisory skills with the ability to build trust and credibility with managers and staff.

Policy and Compliance
Experience drafting, interpreting and applying HR policies and procedures. Understanding of SCHADS Award requirements and Fair Work obligations.
