About the Role
Custom Works NT is a Northern Territory–based aluminium boat manufacturer and fabrication shop. We deliver custom vessels and trailers, as well as bespoke projects and repair work for marine clients. We’re seeking an experienced Aluminium Welder/Fabricator who can work independently, solve problems on the floor, and produce high-quality outcomes with minimal supervision. Location: Berrimah, NT (7 Pruen Road)
Employment: Full-time (38-hour week)
Pay: $45–$60 per hour (experience dependent) + overtime available
Start: Immediate
Key Responsibilities
Fabricate and weld aluminium components for boats, trailers and marine structures from detailed drawings and work orders.
Plan jobs end-to-end: mark-out, cut, fit-up, weld and finish to spec with minimal supervision.
Carry out modification and repair work (including on existing vessels) with sound judgement and tidy workmanship.
Liaise with clients and internal teams on job requirements, progress and handover as required.
Record key job details (measurements, materials, technical notes) and relay accurate information to management.
Meet quality standards for weld integrity, alignment and finish; complete self-checks and basic QA.
Maintain a safe, organised work area and contribute to continuous improvement.
For suitable candidates: Coordinate small crews/ apprentices on defined tasks (allocate work, monitor quality, timelines).
Requirements
Proven experience (3-5 years) as an aluminium welder/fabricator; marine/boat-building experience highly regarded.
Competent with aluminium MIG (TIG advantageous), fit-up, jigs/fixtures and distortion control.
Confident reading and interpreting detailed technical drawings and following documented processes.
Proven ability to work independently, think on your feet and deliver to deadlines.
Strong communication skills—clear, professional and proactive (we work closely with drafting/design).
Attention to detail, safe work practices and reliability.
Valid welding qualifications and/or trade certificate (attach with application).
Current driver’s licence.
Preferred
Experience guiding apprentices or coordinating small tasks/day-works.
Trade qualification in fabrication/boilermaking.
Exposure to CNC equipment (laser/router), press brake work and precision fitting.
Marine industry tickets / White Card / Forklift licence.
