Engineering Lead

$230,000 package + 10% bonus + 5 weeks leave | Sydney (Hybrid)

A major insurer is hiring an Engineering Lead to drive automation, delivery quality, and platform modernisation across its Group Insurance division. This is a new role created as part of a broader engineering uplift, reporting directly to the Head of Engineering.

You will lead three squads focused on simplifying delivery, building reusable APIs, and moving the stack towards a modern, automated state. The work is hands-on and delivery-focused, ideal for someone who can move between solution design, technical leadership, and architecture alignment.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead three build-and-run squads within the Group Insurance platform
  • Drive automation and DevSecOps across build, test, and release
  • Oversee solution design and ensure technical alignment with architecture
  • Guide delivery across React, Next.js, AWS serverless, Terraform, MuleSoft, and Salesforce
  • Remain hands-on (around 20 percent) to build proofs of concept and guide delivery
  • Work with product owners, architects, and engineering teams to deliver business outcomes

What you need

  • Proven experience leading multiple engineering teams or squads
  • Strong background in cloud delivery and automation (AWS, Terraform, CI/CD)
  • Knowledge of DevSecOps and secure software delivery
  • Skilled in building scalable, reusable solutions
  • Background in consulting or enterprise delivery, with the ability to meet client priorities while designing solutions that benefit the wider platform (desirable)
  • Insurance or financial services knowledge is useful but not essential
  • Confident communicator who can influence across teams and stakeholders
