What you'll do:
As a Senior ICT Service Operations Officer based in Linfield or Melbourne, you will play an integral role in supporting the digital backbone of Australia's scientific laboratories. Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve close collaboration with laboratory staff to understand their operational needs, mapping complex data flows, managing software inventories, and driving the adoption of innovative digital solutions. You will be instrumental in developing procedures that foster secure and sustainable digital practices across multiple sites. Success in this role requires an ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders-including scientists, technicians, ICT professionals, and vendors-while providing insightful reports on solution uptake and operational challenges. By contributing your expertise to business change management activities and supporting procurement processes, you will help ensure that laboratory software systems are optimally configured for both present needs and future growth. - Engage proactively with testing laboratories to develop and implement effective work practices and procedures that maximise the potential of the air gapped Local Area Network, ensuring seamless business change management activities are supported.
- Map data flows and storage across laboratory environments, developing a comprehensive understanding of current state data locations and methods to inform future improvements.
- Report regularly on solution uptake and operational issues to management and staff user forums, contributing valuable insights to ICT project governance reporting processes.
- Interact constructively with laboratory users and software vendors to create and maintain an up-to-date register of current software and licences, facilitating efficient planning and procurement activities.
- Collaborate closely with ICT staff, laboratory teams, and management to uplift the performance of the air gapped Local Area Network through targeted technical interventions.
- Support the implementation of digital solutions that enhance workflow efficiency and reliability within scientific laboratories, ensuring best practice standards are maintained.
- Contribute actively to the development of procedures and documentation that promote sustainable and secure digital practices throughout the organisation.
- Participate in business change management initiatives designed to modernise laboratory operations while maintaining high levels of security and compliance.
- Provide expert advice on software inventories, licensing requirements, and procurement strategies to ensure optimal resource allocation for laboratory operations.
- Work under broad direction while receiving appropriate technical ICT systems support, demonstrating adaptability in responding to evolving organisational needs.
What you bring:
To excel as a Senior ICT Service Operations Officer in this role based at Linfield or Melbourne, you will bring proven experience supporting IT enhancement projects within scientific environments-ideally spanning instrument control software implementation, data mapping initiatives or workflow optimisation efforts. Your background should reflect strong organisational skills paired with analytical thinking that enables you to solve complex problems efficiently. The ability to collaborate within multidisciplinary teams is essential; your interpersonal skills will allow you to negotiate effectively with both internal stakeholders and external vendors. Clear communication-both written and verbal-is vital for engaging sensitively with laboratory staff from varied backgrounds. Experience supporting ICT operations in scientific laboratories ensures you understand the unique challenges these environments present. Holding an active Baseline AGSVA security clearance is non-negotiable due to compliance requirements. Additional tertiary qualifications in relevant science or technology disciplines will further strengthen your application. Familiarity with software development methodologies, cyber security best practices or data analysis tools is highly valued alongside knowledge of industry standards such as TGA or NATA accreditation processes.
- Demonstrated experience (minimum of 3 years) supporting IT enhancement projects related to instrument control software, data mapping and storage, workflow management or information management systems within scientific environments.
- Proven self-motivation combined with strong organisational skills; well-developed analytical abilities; adept at problem-solving; comfortable working autonomously under broad direction while remaining responsive to team needs.
- Ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams; demonstrated negotiation skills; capable of influencing outcomes positively; skilled at establishing productive relationships with management as well as operational staff and vendors.
- Excellent communication skills including report writing; able to engage empathetically with diverse laboratory staff; proficient in technical documentation creation.
- Experience supporting ICT operations specifically within scientific laboratories-either as an analyst or in a support capacity-ensuring reliable system performance.
- Active Baseline AGSVA security clearance held at time of interview is mandatory for consideration due to strict compliance requirements.
- Tertiary qualifications in chemistry, biology, physics, engineering or ICT fields are desirable for deeper subject matter understanding.
- Knowledge of Software Development principles as well as Cyber Security protocols and Data Analysis techniques is considered advantageous for broader technical coverage.
- Familiarity with Scientific Laboratory Standards such as TGA or NATA accreditations is desirable for ensuring regulatory compliance within laboratory settings.
