The City of Karratha is seeking a dedicated Waste Technical Officer to join our Waste Services Department.
About the role:
The Waste Services Department is responsible for delivering comprehensive waste management services across the City of Karratha, including the management and operation at the 7 Mile and Wickham Waste facilities.
The Waste Technical Officer coordinates and undertakes compliance activities across the City’s Waste Management Facilities. The role focuses on environmental monitoring, compliance testing, and reporting to safeguard the community and environment.
Your Key Responsibilities:
- Provide technical expertise to support effective Waste Services delivery.
- Ensure compliance with facility licences and environmental regulations.
- Assist with planning, implementation, and evaluation of waste services.
- Promote best practice and guide staff on compliance obligations.
- Build staff capability through training and mentoring.
- Support accurate corporate, statutory, and legislative reporting.
Required Qualifications:
Essential:
Demonstrated experience in environmental monitoring, sampling, and laboratory testing, including collection and analysis of field data.
- Knowledge of waste facility operations, landfill management practices, and environmental compliance requirements.
- Strong understanding of relevant legislation and regulations, such as the Environmental Protection Act, Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Act, and DWER licence conditions.
- Proven ability to collect, interpret, and report on environmental data with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Current manual C Class driver’s licence.
- Possession of a current National Police Certificate (issued within the last 6 months).
Desirable:
- Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science, Waste Management, or a related discipline.
- Previous experience working in local government waste management operations or similar regulatory environments.
