Position Summary

The Assistant Accountant is a critical support role within the finance team, responsible for the accurate and timely maintenance of financial records, processing of transactions, and assisting with month-end reporting and compliance activities. This role is a vital step in a professional accounting career, offering exposure to various financial disciplines while supporting the Senior Accountant and Finance Manager in improving overall business performance.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

1. General Ledger and Month-End Support

Prepare and process month-end journal entries, including accruals, prepayments, and intercompany transactions.

Perform balance sheet reconciliations for key accounts (e.g., bank, payroll, fixed assets) to ensure accuracy and integrity of financial data.

Assist in the preparation of Profit and Loss statements and other internal management reports.

Support the year-end closing process and external audit requests.

2. Transactional Accounting

Manage the Accounts Payable (AP) function, including processing invoices, verifying correct general ledger coding, and preparing payment runs.

Oversee the Accounts Receivable (AR) function, including raising invoices, receipting payments, debt collection follow-up, and managing reconciliations.

Conduct daily bank reconciliations and monitor cash flow.

3. Compliance and Reporting

Assist with the preparation and lodgement of Australian tax compliance obligations, including monthly/quarterly Business Activity Statements (BAS) and Instalment Activity Statements (IAS).

Maintain the Fixed Asset Register, calculating and recording monthly depreciation and managing asset disposals/additions.

Assist in preparing or acquitting government grants and funding reports, where applicable.

4. Budgeting and Forecasting

Support the Finance Manager with the annual budget preparation process.

Assist in compiling data for financial forecasting and variance analysis (actuals vs. budget).

5. Administration and Ad Hoc

Maintain accurate and organised financial records and documentation.

Assist with the continuous improvement of finance processes and internal controls.

Undertake ad-hoc tasks and special projects as directed by the Senior Accountant or Finance Manager.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

Relevant tertiary qualification in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Mathematics.

Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in a finance or accounts-related role, preferably as an Assistant Accountant or Accounts Officer.

Proven experience with core accounting processes including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and bank reconciliations.

Sound knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards (AASB) and tax compliance principles (GST, BAS).

Highly Regarded

Commencement or pursuit of professional accounting qualifications

Experience with a major accounting software package
