First Class Machinist / Fitter Turner
Industrial Component Restoration Specialist
A1 Metallising Services | Turrella, Sydney | $40-$50/hour
Are you seeking a role where your machining expertise makes a real difference to Australian industry?
Australian mining and manufacturing operations depend on massive, expensive equipment that eventually wears out. Instead of scrapping these critical components, A1 Metallising Services uses advanced restoration techniques to return them to service. As our First Class Machinist, you'll combine traditional machining expertise with thermal spray technology to restore critical machinery components.
What Makes This Different
This is skilled restoration work, not repetitive production machining. Each component presents its own challenges – different wear patterns, unique geometries, and individual machining requirements. You'll work with mining conveyor drums, turbine components, and industrial machinery – the kind of large-scale, complex work that showcases real machining skill.
Key Responsibilities
Precision Restoration Machining
Set up and operate large manual lathes using 4-jaw chucks on industrial-scale components
Work between centres and with rotators on complex restoration projects requiring steadies and specialised fixtures
Machine worn components to precise tolerances using ISO standard measuring techniques
Collaborate with thermal spray technicians to prepare surfaces for coating applications
Technical Problem-Solving
Read and interpret engineering drawings to determine optimal machining approaches for worn components
Develop job setups for unusual geometries and challenging restoration requirements
Work with cutting-edge technology including Australia's first Hot Wire Laser System
Maintain quality standards essential for industrial applications where precision matters
Workshop Operations
Operate overhead cranes and forklifts safely for handling large industrial components
Work independently while contributing effectively to team objectives and project timelines
Communicate with production team, sales, and clients regarding technical requirements and capabilities
Follow safety procedures and maintain workshop standards
What You'll Need
Essential Skills:
Proven experience with 4-jaw chuck setup, between centres work, and complex job setups using steadies
Ability to machine to tight tolerances using internal and external micrometers and precision measuring equipment
Strong technical drawing interpretation skills for restoration work
Physical fitness and reliability for handling large industrial components
Good communication skills for coordinating with technical teams and production staff
Mechanical aptitude with a problem-solving mindset
Highly Valued:
CNC machining experience
Previous thermal spray or surface coating knowledge
Overhead crane and forklift operation certification
Experience with large-scale industrial machining projects
