On 1 January 2026, Alfred Health will come together with Kooweerup Regional Health Service, Peninsula Health, Bass Coast Health and Gippsland Southern Health Service to create Bayside Health, a newly merged health service with more than 22,000 employees caring for a community of over 1.2 million Victorians. The merger will also strengthen our workforce, providing new training, education and career opportunities. Subject to final approval on 1 January 2026, all employees from the five health services will transfer to Bayside Health.

About Our Team

The Alfred Pathology Service (APS) is key to providing integrated and timely diagnostic capabilities as part of the largest public pathology laboratory network in Victoria.

Alfred Health supports the local community while addressing complex state-wide needs, including trauma, organ transplantation and HIV/AIDS diagnostics. APS conducts all pathology testing for multiple hospitals, offering a comprehensive range of services through five specialized units: Anatomical Pathology, Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Microbiology, and Human Molecular Pathology.

Alfred Health and Monash Health have established a partnership to deliver a pathology services at Western Health (WH), which includes, collection centres, branch laboratories at New Footscray Hospital and Sunshine Hospital and point-of-care services. We are working in partnership to ensure we meet future demands and continue to provide high quality pathology services for our patients and the community across both health services.

Position Summary

The role of the medical laboratory technician is to rotate through various sections of the Unit, working as part of a laboratory team in the processing of histology and cytology specimens. The primary responsibilities of this role are;

• Specimen reception duties including case registration, specimen distribution, organising send-away tests
• Laboratory duties including specimen preparation, assisting at specimen cut-up, tissue processing, tissue embedding, microtomy and staining
• Reagent preparation including QC checks and record keeping, maintaining reagent inventory and laboratory supplies
• Inward goods receiving, maintaining stocks of supplies and consumables
• Laboratory equipment maintenance, service and calibration
• Filing of microscope slides, paraffin blocks and patient related records
• General laboratory duties including cleaning and decontamination of laboratory equipment, instruments, glassware and work surfaces
• Participation in rotating rosters

About You

Qualifications Required:

• Minimum of Diploma of Applied Science (Medical Laboratory), Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Laboratory Technology or Laboratory Operations, or equivalent

Experience and Skills Required:

• Previous experience in a pathology laboratory.
• Previous experience with histological techniques.
