About Our Team
The Alfred Pathology Service (APS) is key to providing integrated and timely diagnostic capabilities as part of the largest public pathology laboratory network in Victoria.
Alfred Health supports the local community while addressing complex state-wide needs, including trauma, organ transplantation and HIV/AIDS diagnostics. APS conducts all pathology testing for multiple hospitals, offering a comprehensive range of services through five specialized units: Anatomical Pathology, Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Microbiology, and Human Molecular Pathology.

Alfred Health and Monash Health have established a partnership to deliver a pathology services at Western Health (WH), which includes, collection centres, branch laboratories at New Footscray Hospital and Sunshine Hospital and point-of-care services. We are working in partnership to ensure we meet future demands and continue to provide high quality pathology services for our patients and the community across both health services.
Position Summary
The role of the medical laboratory technician is to rotate through various sections of the Anatomical Pathology and Cytology departments at New Footscray Hospital, working as part of a laboratory team in the processing of histology and cytology specimens. The primary responsibilities of this role are:
- Specimen reception duties including case registration, specimen distribution, organising send-away tests.
- Laboratory duties including specimen preparation, assisting at specimen cut-up, tissue processing, tissue embedding, microtomy and staining.
- Cytology specimen preparation and staining.
- Reagent preparation including Quality Control (QC) checks and record keeping, maintaining reagent inventory and laboratory supplies.
- Inward goods receiving, maintaining stocks of supplies and consumables.
- Laboratory equipment maintenance, service and calibration.
- Filing of microscope slides, paraffin blocks and patient related records.
- MDT slide preparation and documentation.
- General laboratory duties including cleaning and decontamination of laboratory equipment, instruments, glassware and work surfaces.
- Participate in rotation to the Sunshine Hospital Laboratory or Prahran as required. At New Footscray Hospital, the role will require participation in a rotating roster, Monday to Sunday between the hours of 06:30 to 18:00 hours.
About You
Qualifications Required:
- Diploma of Applied Science (Medical Laboratory) or equivalent.
Experience and Skills Required:
- Previous experience working in an Anatomical Pathology Laboratory.
- Cytology techniques and slide preparation.
- Previous experience with data entry.
- Able to communicate well both verbally and in writing.
- Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills.
- Computer proficiency and good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Class C driver’s license and willingness to travel to the various WH and Prahran sites as needed.
