Role

Melbourne High School is seeking a dynamic and experienced Human Resources Manager to play a critical role in supporting the strategic direction of the school’s people management. Reporting to the Business Manager, the HR Manager will provide guidance across all facets of HR to support the effective management of staffing, workplace relations, workforce planning, compliance, and staff wellbeing. This role is central to fostering a positive, inclusive, and high-performing work culture that supports excellence in education.

Range 4 is distinguished by broader management responsibility, particularly in the areas of finance, human resource and other support functions. Range 4 is responsible for managing a range of functions under a wide range of conditions, subject to the size and complexity of school operations.

Objectives will, generally, be clearly defined; guidelines will be broad and day-to-day direction minimal. Management responsibility extends to ensuring appropriate support levels are maintained across the school. Range 4 generally provides key support and timely advice to the leadership team and school council and liaises with the general school community, the Department and other government agencies and service providers.

Specialised professional roles will carry a high level of independence and accountability where suitable scope is provided to achieve objectives.

An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students but must not include duties of teaching as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor. Supervision of students cannot be required except where it is an integral part of the employee’s position or involves supervision of students individually or in small groups, in controlled circumstances, where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.

The position is full time, however there is flexibility around work hours and time fraction for the successful candidate.

Working as an Education Support (ES) staff member in the Department of Education offers an excellent work-life balance, including nearly 11 weeks of school holidays throughout the year.

Responsibilities

· Assist the Principal and Business Manager to deliver and support HR strategies aligned with school and Department of Education priorities.

· Manage end-to-end recruitment, onboarding, and offboarding processes for teaching and non-teaching staff.

· Provide advice and support on employee matters, performance management, OHS and staff wellbeing.

· Develop and maintain local HR policies, ensuring compliance with DET legislation.

· Oversee payroll processes including coordination with central payroll systems.

· Process staff leave requests, maintain leave records, and assist staff in understanding their leave entitlements and options.

· Coordinate and manage WorkCover claims, return-to-work plans, and liaise with relevant external providers.

· Promote a positive workplace culture aligned with the school’s values and goals.

· Other duties as required by the Principal or Business Manager

Selection Criteria

SC1 Demonstrated experience in a senior HR role, preferably within the education sector or a similarly complex environment.

SC2 Proven experience managing end-to-end DET HR functions or similar—including recruitment, onboarding, leave and payroll, using EduPay (or similar systems) to support and administer key processes.

SC3 Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply DET HR policies, delivering accurate and timely advice to leadership based on a thorough understanding of policy frameworks.

SC4 Well developed organisation skills, the ability to prioritise work tasks and utilise effective time management skills

SC5 Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team while maintaining confidentially and privacy around the work area
