The Mount Barker District Council is seeking a motivated and experienced Senior Sustainability Officer to lead and drive sustainability initiatives across the Council and the broader community. This role plays a critical part in shaping and implementing strategies that align with the Council’s commitment to environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and sustainable development.

Position Objectives

Achieve Council Sustainability Goals: Drive the achievement of Council’s sustainability objectives by actively reducing emissions, energy consumption, waste generation, and water usage across Council operations and the broader community.

Climate Emergency Response: Lead the implementation, monitoring, and reporting of actions arising from Council’s climate emergency declaration, with a primary focus on climate change mitigation strategies and initiatives.

Sustainability Integration: Provide expert advice and support to ensure sustainability principles are effectively integrated into Council projects, policies, and decision-making processes.

Regional Collaboration and Partnerships: Build, maintain, and enhance partnerships with regional governments, businesses, community organisations, and NGOs to foster collaborative approaches to sustainability and climate resilience.

About you:

Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Management, or equivalent, desirable

Extensively demonstrated work experience in the delivery of sustainability strategy and initiatives.

Experience in climate action in local, state government or private sector essential.

Experience in a Local Government environment preferable but not essential.

Experience in developing and coordinating practical projects in the areas of, energy and climate mitigation.

Experience in working with business and community groups essential.
