The Northern Land Council (NLC) is seeking a skilled and motivated Internal Audit & Compliance Officer to join our Governance, Compliance and Risk team.

This is a unique opportunity to support strong governance and compliance within a complex statutory organisation that represents Aboriginal people across the Top End of the Northern Territory. Bring your expertise and help drive accountability and continuous improvement across the NLC.

About the Role

The Internal Audit & Compliance Officer is a key contributor to the delivery of NLC’s internal audit and compliance frameworks, helping to embed a culture of integrity, accountability, and continuous improvement. As part of the Governance, Compliance and Risk team, this role offers the opportunity to work across the organisation, engage with a broad range of stakeholders, and support strong corporate governance that empowers Traditional Owners and Aboriginal communities throughout the Top End.

What you will bring:

We’re seeking a candidate with proven experience in governance, compliance, or risk, complemented by strong communication and organisational skills. Ideally, you’ll have supported internal audit and compliance frameworks, policies, and procedures, and be familiar with conducting internal compliance reviews (“health checks”) and preparing reports that drive continuous improvement. Your ability to monitor and report against key corporate deadlines—including accurate dashboard reporting—will be key to thriving in this role

In addition to this you will have

  • A minimum Advanced Diploma of Governance, Risk and Compliance (or equivalent experience).
  • At least 2 years’ experience in governance, compliance, quality assurance, corporate policy or interpreting legislation.
  • Knowledge of legislative and policy frameworks relevant to Aboriginal Land Councils or the ability to acquire this quickly.
  • Knowledge of the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013 is highly desirable

We offer:

  • A base salary of $84,985 per annum plus 15% superannuation and salary sacrificing up to $15,900 + Meal Entertainment and Holiday Accommodation benefits up to $2,650 per year.
  • Other benefits under our Enterprise Agreement include:
  • District allowance of up to $4,631 per annum for individuals with dependents and $2,539 without dependents.
  • 5 weeks annual leave, leaving loading, 18 days personal leave;
  • Paid Christmas close down;
  • Upon completion of 12 months of service an Annual airfare with a net (in hand) value of $2,724

It is responsible for assisting Aboriginal peoples in the Top End of the Northern Territory to acquire and manage their traditional lands and seas.

In 1976 the Parliament of Australia passed the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 (ALRA). Since then approximately 50 percent of the land in the NT has become Aboriginal land in addition to 85 percent of the coastline. A large proportion of the remaining land mass is subject to Native Title interests.

Land Councils are important bodies as they give Aboriginal peoples a voice on issues affecting their lands, seas and communities.
