Position Title: Cultural Support Worker (Youth Worker Equivalent)
Award/Level: SCHADS Award
Employment Type: Casual with a possibility of Full-time / Part-time
Position Purpose
The Cultural Support Worker provides direct care and support to children and young people aged 0–17 years & Families, ensuring their wellbeing, safety, and healthy development while embedding cultural knowledge and practices. The role mirrors that of a Youth Worker but with an added focus on strengthening cultural identity, connection to Country, and community belonging.
Key Responsibilities
Support for Children, Young People (0–17 years) & Families
Provide age-appropriate care, mentoring, and support to children, young people and families across all developmental stages.
Promote safety, emotional wellbeing, and healthy growth for children from infancy to adolescence while also providing support to families.
Assist children, young people and families in building life skills (e.g., routines, self-care, schooling, independence skills for older youth).
Advocate for the needs and rights of children, young people and families in line with the Child Protection Act 1999 (QLD) and relevant standards.
Participate in care planning, case meetings, reviews, team meetings and training.
Cultural Support
Embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural perspectives into daily care and support.
Facilitate opportunities for cultural connection, language, identity building, and community participation.
Support children, young people and families to strengthen their cultural identity through connection to kin, Elders, and cultural activities.
Respectfully engage with families, kin, and communities to ensure cultural safety.
Teamwork & Compliance
Work collaboratively with carers, cultural mentors, staff, and external stakeholders.
Maintain accurate case notes, records, and reporting requirements.
Follow all our policies and procedures, including WHS, child safety, and confidentiality.
Attend training, supervision, and professional development.
Key Selection Criteria
Essential
Minimum Certificate IV in Youth Work, Child and Family Studies, Community Services, or related field.
Minimum two (2) years’ experience working with children and young people (0–17 years) in care, youth work, or community support roles.
Strong knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and communities.
Ability to build positive, trusting relationships with children, young people, families, and stakeholders.
Age-appropriate mentoring and guidance skills, including knowledge of child development stages.
Sound written and verbal communication skills, including case noting and reporting.
Ability to work shifts including evenings, weekends, and sleepovers.
Current Blue Card (Working with Children Check).
Current National Police Check (or willingness to obtain one).
Current First Aid/CPR.
Current driver’s licence.
Desirable
Lived experience and/or strong connection to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
Understanding of trauma-informed and culturally safe practice.
Experience working in a residential or community-based care environment.
Administration experience/skills
Conditions of Employment
Employment is under the SCHADS Award.
May involve travel across the region.
Cultural leave and flexibility are recognised and supported.
