About Us
At Hanwha Energy Australia, we’re not just building energy solutions, we’re shaping the future of clean energy. As part of the global Hanwha Group, we bring world-class innovation to Australia through our retail brand Nectr, empowering homes and businesses to join the renewable revolution.
Now, we’re launching a game-changing Virtual Power Plant (VPP). By linking households, businesses, and advanced battery systems, we’re creating a smarter, more flexible, and more sustainable energy network. Think next-gen energy orchestration at scale, and we want you to be part of it.
The Role
As our Engineer – VPP, you’ll be right in the thick of it, engineering the brains and muscle of the Nectr VPP. From integrating cutting-edge batteries and OEM gateways, to fine-tuning control strategies, building robust data pipelines, and enabling NEM participation, you’ll make sure our fleet doesn’t just run, it performs.
This is your chance to design, build, and operate Australia’s decentralised energy future in real time. You’ll collaborate with top-tier OEMs, innovative platform partners, and a multidisciplinary internal team to deliver solutions that scale, comply, and delight.
What You’ll Be Doing
Systems Integration & Controls
Onboard and integrate batteries/gateways (Tesla, SAJ, SolarEdge + more CEC-listed OEMs).
Build smart charge/discharge scheduling, dispatch logic, and safe operating windows.
Ensure fleet reliability: SoC/thermal management, network export/import constraints.
VPP Platform Engineering
Develop APIs/webhooks for real-time orchestration.
Build telemetry/data pipelines (streaming + batch) for fleet monitoring, forecasting, and compliance.
Set up observability and alerting so the VPP stays rock solid.
Vendor & OEM Partnerships
Be the go-to technical point for OEMs/vendors.
Define interfaces (Modbus, REST, etc.), run test plans, and resolve issues with RCA.
Align firmware roadmaps, security advisories, and compatibility updates.
Market Integration & Compliance
Engineer pathways for NEM participation: telemetry, FCAS enablement, AEMO data.
Support system strength/inertia contracts with modelling, testing, and artefacts.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Partner with Product, Ops, Software, Compliance, and Trading to deliver VPP solutions that actually work in the real world.
What You Bring
4–8+ years in power systems/controls/DER integration or related fields.
Hands-on with battery OEMs & VPP platforms.
Strong grasp of inverter resources, comms protocols, and network constraints.
API/data pipeline building skills (Python/Go/Node) on AWS/Azure/GCP.
NEM operations/FCAS familiarity and translating market rules into engineering action.
Great communicator: you can turn technical complexity into clear specs, test cases, and Jira tickets that OEMs actually get.
Bonus points for:
Startup/scale-up energy tech experience.
AEMO standards know-how.
Agile/project certifications.
Qualifications: Degree in Electrical, Power, Mechatronics, or Computer Engineering (or similar).
Why Join Us?
Impact: Build one of Australia’s first large-scale VPPs, your work will literally keep the grid balanced.
Innovation: Work with bleeding-edge DER, trading platforms, and market integrations.
Growth: Be part of a scale-up with global backing and endless opportunities.
Culture: Collaborative, purpose-driven, and energised by what’s next.
