Location: Gunnedah, NSW
Contract Type: Full Time, 35 hours a week
Salary: $102,758 to $113,426 per annum

Our Next Coordinator of Management Accounting

The Coordinator of Management Accounting will support the Council in coordinating monthly and quarterly budget reviews, providing guidance to budget managers, and contributing to the overall financial reporting process. You’ll be an integral part of a team that provides valuable services to the local community. Your contributions will directly support Gunnedah Shire Council’s mission to maintain accurate, transparent, and efficient financial operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement and communicate the priorities, strategies and actions of Management Accounting function, in accordance with the relevant corporate plans and Councils integrated strategic plans
  • Lead and manage the delivery of services from the section in-line with the approved annual budget and operational plan
  • Provide leadership and mentoring to staff from within the section in order to meet the desired outcomes of the department
  • Provide strategic advice to the Manager Finance and Executives with regard to all items relating to Management Accounting
  • Contribute to the strategic direction and leadership of the organisation including strong cooperation and coordination across all departments
  • Construct and maintain Councils Long Term Financial Plan and associated modelling and scenario planning
  • Construct and maintain Councils labour budgets and variance analysis
  • Coordinate the completion of Council monthly budget reporting and quarterly budget review program
  • Develop and manage the systems and procedures utilised for the effective budget management of the organisation, including all reporting mechanisms and proactive budget analysis tools
  • Manage, maintain and assist with Grant acquittals and required statutory and government regulated returns
  • Implement the decisions of Council relevant to the finance section and report on the progress of actions taken (Projects, Budgets, Resolutions)
  • Contribute to the completion of Councils statutory financial reports, acquittals, returns and other finance and revenue requirements
  • Utilise expert knowledge to provide reporting and analysis of financial data to internal customers
  • Develop, implement, review and maintain all related policies, management directives, processes and procedures as required
  • Provide ongoing review and development of the systems and processes employed for the capture and management of Council’s financial data, budget variances and internal reporting requirements
  • Ensure that complete and accurate financial records are captured and maintained within the appropriate systems and in accordance with legislation, Council policies, management directives and procedures
  • Keep up to date with all relevant financial and revenue legislation, standards, departmental circulars and other management requirements
  • Develop and manage the workforce planning, recruitment and retention programs for the section

Key Requirements:

  • Tertiary qualification in Finance; Business; Commerce; or a related field
  • Class C Drivers license
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience working in a Finance field at a senior level
  • Strong understanding of the Australian Accounting Standards, NSW Local Government Act and the Local Government Code of Accounting Practice & Financial Reporting
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic financial planning including financial modeling and scenario analysis
  • A working knowledge of the roles and responsibilities set out in the Workplace Health and Safety Act and the principles of the EEO Act
  • Effective leadership skills that demonstrate the ability to provide clear objectives, to foster a positive and proactive working culture and to motivate staff towards higher performance and personal accomplishment
  • Demonstrated commitment to people management practices that value and encourages continual learning and professional development
  • Demonstrated ability in initiating and managing change processes and section performance management
  • Strong negotiation and influencing skills, with the ability to resolve disputes, find consensus and broker agreements
  • Excellent report writing skills and a commitment to proactive communication, with the ability to simplify complex technical issues when dealing with internal customers or advising Councilors and the community
  • Experience with the use of the Microsoft Office suite of products and demonstrated broad computer literacy

While not required, desirable characteristics of a successful candidate could include:

  • Relevant post-graduate qualifications or membership to a professional accounting body i.e. CPA or CA
  • Demonstrated understanding of the environment and issues affecting the NSW local government industry and the ability to use this knowledge to tailor strategy and approaches
