Specialist Medical Officer - Palliative Care
Create the future of community palliative care, one solution at a time.
At Karuna, we believe in walking alongside people with life-limiting illness and their families, helping them live fully with comfort, dignity, and peace. Guided by compassion, respect, and connection, our team has been providing specialist in-home and community-based palliative care for over 30 years.
We are looking for a part-time Palliative Care Medical Officer with experience, to join our close-knit and highly skilled team. This is an opportunity to expand your expertise in a supportive environment where your work has immediate and meaningful impact.
Why Karuna?
Karuna is a respected, values-driven community organisation guided by Buddhist principles and committed to alleviating suffering. We provide specialist palliative care and holistic support that honours dignity, compassion, and choice, in alignment with our values of Kindness, Humility, Respect, and Courage. Join a team that values innovation, collaboration, and deeply human care.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a qualified Palliative Care Medical Officer to join our team.
This role is open only to medical practitioners with specialist training and expertise in palliative medicine.
You will have a deep understanding of complex symptom management, end-of-life care, and the unique needs of patients and families facing life-limiting illnesses.
You bring a genuine commitment to providing compassionate, patient-centred care and a desire to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
What You’ll Do
As a valued member of Karuna’s Specialist Palliative Care Service, you will:
Provide patient reviews and prescribing support in collaboration with treating doctors, via digital consultations, phone calls, and home visits for more complex cases.
Communicate clearly and compassionately with GPs, specialists, and families regarding treatment and care plans.
Complete documentation in Palcare, including assessments, progress notes, and service data.
Facilitate advanced care planning discussions and complete Acute Resuscitation Plans (ARP) where needed.
Provide advice to the clinical team on symptom management and end-of-life planning.
Contribute to multidisciplinary case reviews and reflective practice meetings.
Assist with Medicare billing and equipment applications.
What You’ll Bring
Current registration with AHPRA as a Medical Practitioner.
FAChPM preferred but other qualifications and levels of experience will be considered.
Demonstrated experience in medical practice (10 years preferred, but not essential for the right candidate).
Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
A current Queensland Driver’s Licence.
What We Offer
At Karuna, you will find more than a workplace - you’ll find a place where your specialist expertise, curiosity, and care for others are deeply valued.
Flexibility - work hours that fit with your lifestyle.
Impact - be part of a team that changes lives every day.
Growth - develop your skills in palliative care with support from an experienced, multidisciplinary team.
Values-driven culture – join a community that values compassion, presence, and connection.
A police check will be required for this role—we’ll arrange and cover the cost.
