Position Title: Automotive Electrical Engineer
Location: Pakenham or Laverton North, VIC
Department: Engineering
Employment Type: Permanent, Full-Time
Salary Range: $100,000 – $145,000 + Superannuation (depending on experience)
Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM (with reasonable flexibility)

Position Summary
The Automotive Electrical Engineer is responsible for the design, documentation, and technical oversight of electrical systems across MFI's specialist vehicle builds. This role develops wiring schematics and routing documentation for both manufacturing and installation, ensuring compliance with Australian Design Rules (ADR) and electrical standards.
While primarily focused on engineering and documentation, this role also provides hands-on technical support when required, acting as a key escalation point for our Automotive Electrician and fitters. The engineer also leads the development of MFI's internal electrical standards, SOPs, and customer-facing documentation.
This position requires regular cross-site collaboration, with travel between Pakenham and Laverton (once or twice per fortnight, using a company pool vehicle).
Key Responsibilities
Electrical Design & Documentation
Develop and maintain wiring schematics, harness drawings, and routing documentation for vehicle builds.
Produce clear, accurate, and compliant documentation to support both internal and external manufacturing, and installations.
Maintain and update MFI electrical standards, SOPs, and customer documentation.
Technical Support & Escalation
Act as a technical escalation point for the Automotive Electrician and fitters when advanced electrical issues arise.
Provide occasional hands-on support in diagnostics, prototype fit-outs, or complex installations.
Review installation work against schematics and provide corrective guidance where required.
Compliance & Quality
Ensure all electrical designs and installations meet relevant Australian Design Rules (ADR), industry regulations, and electrical safety standards.
Support quality assurance by contributing to inspection and test plans for electrical systems.
Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives in design, documentation, and installation processes.
Collaboration & Knowledge Sharing
Work closely with mechanical design and workshop teams to ensure smooth integration of electrical systems into vehicle builds.
Provide training and technical guidance to fitters and technicians, promoting best practices in wiring and system integration.
Collaborate with engineering and operations colleagues to align design outputs with production capability.
Key Skills & Qualifications
Essential
Bachelor's degree or Advanced Diploma in Electrical Engineering (or related discipline).
Demonstrated experience in automotive electrical systems (12/24V, wiring harnesses, CAN bus, system integration).
Minimum 3-5 years of automotive electrical systems experience is required.
Strong ability to design and document electrical schematics and routing diagrams.
Demonstrated experience in creating simple electrical schematics and routing diagrams.
Understanding of ADR and relevant Australian electrical standards.
Practical, hands-on ability to support diagnostics and installations when required.
Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Strong communication skills, able to guide technicians and collaborate across teams.
Desirable
Certificate III in Automotive Electrical Technology (or equivalent trade background).
Experience with emergency warning systems and communications/radio equipment.
Knowledge of 240V inverters and auxiliary systems.
Exposure to CAD/ECAD or schematic design tools (any platform).
