Position Objectives and Responsibilities
The Ngani Operations Coordinator ensures the café operates as a culturally safe, vibrant, and financially sustainable enterprise. This role combines hospitality leadership with an educational focus — overseeing staff, volunteers, and learners to ensure a safe, compliant, and supportive environment that reflects Ngutu College’s values. Ngani is open to public Monday-Friday as well as servicing the school community, private catering and venue hire.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Oversight

Lead daily café operations, maintaining compliance with all relevant food safety, workplace health and safety, and child safety legislation.

Coordinate kitchen and front-of-house operations for smooth service delivery.

Manage rosters, shift planning, and resource allocation of young people, volunteers and staff in communication with Lead Educators and TRT Co-ordinator.

Oversee stock, supplier relationships, and service standards to ensure smooth operations.

Coordinate with Educators and the Event Coordinator to integrate café services with learning goals, on-site events, and catering opportunities.

Proficient with basic cooking and kitchenhand skills.

People & Culture

Provide visible and actively engaged leadership, supervision, and mentoring of staff, volunteers, and young people in Ngani Café.

Ensure safe systems of work, including induction, supervision and training - aligned with child safety and volunteer management standards.

Foster a culturally safe, respectful, and inclusive environment to uphold Ngutu College’s values.

Support young people to build workplace readiness, develop skills and build confidence.

Financial & Resource Management

Monitor budgets, wage costs, and stock control to ensure financial sustainability.

Regularly review supplier arrangements and procurement processes to maintain quality standards and achieve cost-effective outcomes.

Track, analyse, and report on operational and financial performance.

Community & Customer Experience

Uphold Ngani’s reputation for excellent service, wholesome food, and high-quality coffee.

Handle customer feedback professionally and proactively.

Strengthen community engagement through initiatives that connect the café to the wider community.

Technical Requirements

Food Safety Supervisor certification (mandatory).

Working With Children Check (mandatory).

Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40122) – required to supervise, train, and assess the skills of young people and volunteers in a workplace learning environment (current or willing to obtain)

Barista and/or kitchen operations knowledge.

Proven experience in hospitality or café management, including financial oversight and staff supervision.

Proficient in basic cooking and kitchenhand skills.

Must hold:

Working with Children Check (WWCC) – Not Prohibited (Current - mandatory)

Responding to Risks of Harm, Abuse and Neglect – Education and Care (RRHAN-EC) (Current or willing to obtain prior to commencing - mandatory)

First Aid Certificate (Current or willing to obtain prior to commencing - mandatory)

Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40122). (Current or willing to obtain)

Other requirements include: a willingness to participate in occasional out-of-hours activities such as College events, ongoing engagement in relevant professional learning and development and participation in regular performance reviews and staff feedback processes.
