Kurbingui Youth and Family Development is seeking a dedicated and skilled individual to fill the role of Skilling Queenslanders for Work (SQW) Construction Supervisor. This position is responsible for overseeing the delivery of small-scale community construction projects, maintaining Kurbingui's facilities, and mentoring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander trainees engaged in the SQW Construction Program. The role combines property maintenance across Kurbingui's multiple sites along with the supervision of Cert I Construction Trainees delivering real-world community-based projects. This position plays a critical role in enhancing Kurbingui's facilities and providing culturally safe mentorship to emerging First Nations Construction workers.

Key Responsibilities

Construction Supervision & Project Delivery

Manage and coordinate a team of Cert 1 - Construction Trainees for the 20-week SQW program cycle.

Supervise community-based construction projects to ensure quality, timeliness, and compliance with safety standards.

Liaise with internal teams and external stakeholders (e.g. government agencies, community partners) on project scopes and delivery.

Oversee procurement and use of materials, tools, and resources.

Monitor project budgets and timelines and provide regular progress reports.

Property Maintenance & Facilities Management

Perform and coordinate general maintenance and repairs across Kurbingui properties.

Develop maintenance schedules and conduct regular inspections.

Manage small refurbishments, landscaping, and facility improvement works.

Liaise with contractors and suppliers for maintenance-related services.

Maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with WHS and building codes.

Mentoring & Training of Trainees

Provide hands-on supervision, instruction, and mentorship to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander trainees.

Teach safe work practices, tool handling, and job site protocols.

Foster a supportive and culturally safe learning environment.

Support the professional development of trainees in partnership with Kurbingui's Employment & Training team.

Cultural Awareness & Inclusion

Engage respectfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.

Promote cultural safety and uphold Kurbingui's values and protocols.

Encourage cultural identity and pride, self-determination among trainees.

Workplace Health & Safety

Implement and enforce WHS practices in all areas of responsibility.

Conduct risk assessments and safety inductions for all project and property sites.

Lead by example in maintaining a safe, inclusive, and professional work culture.

Key Selection Criteria

Essential

Proven experience in construction supervision, facilities maintenance, or project management.

Minimum 1-2 years of construction supervision experience is required.

Experience mentoring or supervising young people in a training or employment program.

Trade qualification in construction, carpentry, landscaping, or general building (Minimum Certificate II Construction)

Certificate II Construction qualification is required as the minimum acceptable trade qualification.

Strong knowledge of construction methods, WHS, and compliance standards.

Demonstrated cultural capability and experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Ability to coordinate works across multiple sites and manage competing priorities.

Excellent communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills.

Current driver's licence and the ability to travel.

Current Working with Children Check (Blue Card).

Australian work rights are required for this position.

Desirable

Prior involvement in Skilling Queenslanders for Work or similar employment programs.

Experience working with Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander people.

Experience working with or mentoring young people.
