What is the role?
Are you passionate about helping others and enjoy having the opportunity to work on a variety of tasks each day? We are looking for motivated people to join our Workplace Relations teams as HR Advisors. Positions are currently available in our People Centre and Industrial Relations teams at the Band 5 level, which sits within the broader Workplace Relations team within People Services branch.
People Centre
The People Centre team are responsible for assisting in the delivery of a range of HR advice, services and initiatives to support the Organisation. Our team provides both Tier 1 frontline HR support to all AFP members, and Tier 2 HR advice for moderately complex matters to AFP members within National HQ. This client facing role works closely with frontline members, liaising with internal and external stakeholders, while maintaining effective working relationships. People Centre also collaborate closely with Tier 3 advisory teams such as Industrial Relations, Performance Management and People Policy, all sitting within the broader Workplace Relations team.
Industrial Relations
The Industrial Relations team are responsible for overseeing, managing and maintaining the AFP’s employment framework. The Industrial Relations team are a Tier 3 advisory team, providing an escalation point for complex matters arising from and relating to the employment framework. The team provide considered advice to decision makers and HR teams across the organisation, as well as actively seeking opportunities to align the employment framework to the Commissioner’s intent and HR best practice.
As a Team Member in the AFP you will be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. It is expected that the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.
What will you do?
The key tasks and responsibilities of this role include:
- Providing professional, accurate and concise HR advice to employees and business areas on the application of the AFP’s employment framework, including the AFP Enterprise Agreement and supporting governance.
- Interpreting and applying contemporary HR theory, frameworks, principles, policies, and practice in your advice.
- Working collaboratively with Command Corporate Support Unit (CCSU) HR teams, Payroll, Recruitment and Workplace Relations on general and complex HR matters.
- Assisting with the development and implementation of innovative solutions to enhance self-service functionality and process improvements.
- Establishing and maintaining effective business relationships and professional networks with HR stakeholders, Executive and other corporate enabling teams.
- Maintaining systems for recording and reporting on HR activities and being accountable to reporting obligations.
- Displaying professional ethical standards and personal integrity in dealing with sensitive personnel information.
- Contributing to a positive and inclusive team culture through modelling professional behaviours.

Essential Requirements
- You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.
- A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
- Demonstrated experience in HR roles, either administrative, advisory and/or customer service roles.
Desirable Requirements
The following skills and/or experience would be highly regarded:
- Tertiary qualifications in HR or related field.

- This role is located in Canberra and applicants are expected to be based in Canberra.
- This role is an AFP Band level 5.
