Southern Highlands Addiction Retreat (SHAR), located in Canyonleigh, NSW is a private drug and alcohol residential rehabilitation facility which opened in April 2024. We are seeking a compassionate and experienced Psychiatrist with an interest in mental health to join our dedicated team for one to two days a week. As a leading provider of addiction recovery services, we are committed to providing comprehensive medical care to support our guests on their journey to wellness.

Situated on a picturesque 40-hectare property, Southern Highlands Addiction Retreat offers a peaceful environment for individuals seeking recovery from addiction. Our holistic approach addresses mental, emotional, psychological, spiritual and physical well-being.
We have also owned and operated Gunnebah Addiction Retreat in Northern NSW for the past nine years. Our Doctor, Jennifer Parer, is the co-owner of both retreats and will be available to help establish and support this role
The Role:
Reviewing maladaptive behaviors to discern potential addictions. Formulating sustainable, culturally congruent interventions. Administering and perceiving clients' adherence to bespoke treatments. Supervising intervention strategies when deemed suitable.
You'll work closely with individuals, providing comprehensive assessments, evidence-based treatment, and support tailored to each person's needs. Your role will see you contributing to clinical decision-making within a skilled team, guiding service improvements, and fostering an environment of collaboration and learning. Beyond direct care, you'll engage with community partners, contribute to education and training, and stay ahead of emerging trends in addiction medicine. Each day, your knowledge and compassion will help create safer, healthier pathways for people navigating alcohol and drug-related challenges.

Key Responsibilities:
Some of the key duties of the positions include:
Assessment and management of addictive disorders, including those where there is a co occurring mental health disorder in specialist medical clinics linked to multidisciplinary teams
Assessment and management of substance use disorders.
Reviewing and advising the clinical team on the management of inpatients with substance use disorders.
Opportunity for ongoing care of guests through telehealth.
Support of two GPs and various therapists.
Will work with private clients, DVA and work cover.
Input into quality improvement projects, clinical guidelines and policy.
Input into service responses to serious clinical incidents.
Involvement in clinical research, where the opportunity arises.
Requirements:
Must hold MBBS and RANZCP and be registered as a Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Experience in treatment of alcohol or other drug use disorders preferred but not essential.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and establish trusting relationships with guests.
Compassion, empathy, and a patient-centered approach to care.
Commitment to working onsite as required.
