Ngwala Willumbong Aboriginal Corporation is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation that is dedicated to delivering quality specialist Alcohol and Drug Treatment, Housing and Homeless and other services to meet the needs of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) People and their families. Our services operate across Victoria.

The Job

The key role of the Public Intoxication Response (PIR) Assertive Outreach Worker is to provide culturally safe assertive outreach support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities who are affected by alcohol (and/or other drug use). Within a culturally safe and harm minimisation approach the worker will undertake:

  • Provide an outreach response to community affected with Alcohol and other drugs.
  • Assist community with an initial referral intake.
  • Assist with transport of community to a safe location.
  • Provide psycho-social support to community members.
  • Refer and link community to Ngwala specialist AOD Case Managers and/or other services.
  • Advocate on behalf of community members.
  • Health promotion, information provision, and health education activities
  • Development and maintenance of community and service linkages & networks
  • Assist with transport of community to a safe location for detox recovery.

Your Skills & Experience

  • Demonstrable knowledge, understanding and commitment to Aboriginal Communities and their wellbeing
  • Demonstrated experience in the provision of screening, assessment and support to people with AOD issues is desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing high quality advice, education and support to community members and families is desirable.
  • Experience working with AOD and/or dual diagnosis community members including a willingness to participate in relevant training.
  • An understanding of the intergenerational loss, grief and trauma that is experienced by community members and the subsequent AOD issues that result.
  • Ability to work within a team, with excellent written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal abilities.
  • Ability to effectively liaise and communicate with a range of organisations and individuals in a collaborative and respectful manner.
  • Strong organisational abilities, willing to take initiative and work independently.
  • Experience in maintaining records, data collection and reporting.
  • Desirable - Certificate IV in Alcohol & Other Drugs, Community Services or equivalent or be willing to enrol and complete expediently after commencement

Mandatory Requirements:

  • Victorian Driver's License
  • National Police Certificate (no older than 3 months).
  • Victorian Employment Working with Children Check
