Construction Commercial Manager required-Melbourne CBD- $180k- $220k+super
Your new company
My client delivers technical civil construction packages across some of Australia's largest projects, to the value of $15m. We're looking for a commercially minded leader to join their team and take charge of the financial and contractual aspects of these civil infrastructure projects.
As Commercial Manager, you'll play a key role in shaping project outcomes from bid stage through to final account, ensuring risks are managed and financial performance is optimised.
A small close-knit team, you will have direct contact with the COO and CEO. You will be responsible from bid to final account for projects.
Your new role
This new role will be responsible for the company's projects across both pre-contract and post-contract phases. The role ensures that commercial risks are identified, evaluated, and managed proactively, and that project financials are accurately monitored and reported. The Commercial Manager leads the contracts and commercial team and supports the senior leadership and project delivery teams in achieving strong financial and operational outcomes.
- Leading commercial strategy across the full project lifecycle
- Reviewing and negotiating head contract terms to manage risk
- Overseeing cost reporting, forecasting, and earned value management
- Driving procurement planning and subcontractor engagement
- Managing variations, claims, and contractual obligations
- Supporting tender submissions and pricing risk assessments
- Collaborating with senior leadership on strategic planning
What you'll need to succeed
- A degree in Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Law, Engineering or similar
- Capable of working in a subcontractor role, quite different to a large Tier 1 part of a team of commercial managers..
- 10+ years' experience in commercial/contracts roles
- Strong knowledge of Australian construction law and standard contracts
- Victorian Civil construction experience would be ideal
- Experience in both pre-contract negotiation and post-contract management
- Skills in cost control, procurement, and commercial reporting
- Thinks strategically and commercially
- Communicates clearly and negotiates effectively
- Leads and mentors with confidence
- Is organised, detail-focused, and proactive
What you'll get in return
A company that is small, yet involved in major projects. Delivering interesting and complex infrastructure packages. CBD offices with the option of a day WFH. Good people who know how to run the business. Working with a smaller contractor, less bureaucracy and less red tape. This role is autonomous, quite different to being part of a commercial team, and and a huge Tier 1 with 100's of employees.
