The Environment Division of the Department of Lands, Planning and Environment is responsible for managing the regulatory framework to reduce impacts on the Territory’s environment. We support the Controller of Water Resources, the Northern Territory Environment Protection Authority and the Minister for Lands, Planning and Environment in performing their statutory functions.

The Environmental Regulation unit assesses applications and supports decision-makers to issue approvals and licences in a timely manner. We support the regulated community to comply and where there has been non-compliance we undertake compliance and enforcement action in line with our Compliance and Enforcement Policy and Enforcement Guideline. As a targeted regulator we prioritise the matters set out in our annual Compliance Plan.

As a Senior Environment Officer you will use your environmental science and regulation skills to effectively and efficiently administer a wide range of environmental legislation, including the Environment Protection Act 2019, the Waste Management and Pollution Control Act 1998, the Water Act 1992, and the Environment Protection (Beverage Containers and Plastic Bags) Act 2011. As part of the Environmental Regulation (Industry) team, you will administer licences for hydrocarbon facilities and offsite mining discharges, advise decision makers on complex environmental regulation matters and provide pollution response functions.
