The Role

The EL1 Cloud Engineer is responsible for managing, designing, delivering and supporting cloud solutions running on enterprise cloud platforms, with a number of cloud engineers reporting directly to them to support delivery and sustainment. They will engage with Directors, Technical Directors and Cloud Solution Architects to identify priorities and deliver platform solutions in support of ASD capability.

Working closely with the engineering team and platform stakeholders, they will ensure cloud solutions meet business requirements and functional specifications, including ongoing sustainment and technical feasibility of the platform. They will be responsible for ensuring solution offerings are in line with enterprise service management and change management processes.

Key Duties:

  • Plan, lead, design, develop, deploy and manage cloud based infrastructure and applications.
  • Proficiency in and understanding of scripting, programming and automation tools.
  • Knowledge of DevOps practices, containerization and continuous integration/ continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines.
  • Responding to incidents and troubleshooting issues related to cloud infrastructure.
  • Performing root cause analysis and implementing preventive measures to avoid future incidents.
  • Accountable for managing and leading a team, including providing clear and consistent communication, setting clear performance and behavioural standards, managing performance, delegating responsibility and guiding and developing people.
  • Ensuring that cloud infrastructure complies with security standards and regulations, such as the Information Security Manual (ISM) and the Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF).
  • Demonstrating interpersonal skills to foster and promote a positive and inclusive workplace culture that aligns with ASD values.
  • Providing support and guidance to developers and other team members on cloud best practices.

About our Team

Mission Data (MD) Division within the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) is responsible for providing the foundational data capabilities to support all of ASD’s functions. We do this via the provision of data platforms and services, management of ASD’s mission data, and providing complex analytic development and support, including Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning capabilities. All roles within MD require extensive knowledge of and compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision-making and ASD mission and policy requirements.

Within MD Division we have a diverse set of roles from data analysis/enrichment all the way to customer facing front-end applications and tools. Our teams are comprised of highly-skilled individuals with a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences. Cloud Division within ASD are seeking people for a range of functions related to cloud including technology, financial operations, security, and project management. By leveraging cloud capabilities, ASD has rapidly scaled and deployed cutting-edge solutions to support its mission-critical work. This ensures we stay ahead of the evolving threat landscape, enhance its cybersecurity posture, and better support Australia's foreign policy interests.

Our Ideal Candidate

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience in leading & delivering ICT solutions across hybrid and commercial cloud.
  • Strong experience in network, security, storage and system engineering/solutions.
  • Proficiency in multiple scripting and programming languages and knowledge of Cloud Frameworks.
  • Experience in Cloud environments, preferably Amazon Web Services.
  • Expertise in automation tools like Azure Automation, AWS Cloud Formation, Terraform or Ansible.
  • Expertise with containers and container orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes.
  • Utilizing CI/CD tools like GitLab CI, or AWS Code Pipeline to streamline development workflows and automate testing, deployment and monitoring.
  • Ensuring compliance with national security regulations.
  • Designing robust, scalable, and secure cloud architectures that meet the unique requirements of ASD.
  • Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines, automating build, test, and deployment processes.
  • Ability to fulfil supervisory duties including proactively developing and mentoring the cloud-engineering workforce.
  • Experience leading a geographically dispersed workforce, including building cohesive teams and managing remote staff.
