About the role

Torres Shire Council is seeking a talented and experienced Human Resources professional to join their dynamic team. This full-time role will play a pivotal part in supporting the Council's workforce and contributing to their strategic HR initiatives. This position can be either based on Thursday Island (but no accommodation is provided by Council) or work from home based in FNQ with regular trips to Thursday Island.

What you'll be doing

Provide expert guidance and support on all aspects of human resources management, including recruitment, employee relations, performance management, and training and development

Collaborate with managers to identify and address workforce needs, ensuring the right people are in the right roles

Assist in the on-boarding and off-boarding of employees, ensuring a smooth transition

Maintain accurate employee records and manage HR-related data and reporting

Contribute to the continuous improvement of HR processes and initiatives

Foster a positive, inclusive, and engaging work environment that aligns with the Council's values

What we're looking for

Tertiary qualification in Human Resources, Business or a related field

Substantial experience in a human resources role including recruitment, ideally within the local government or public sector

Strong understanding of human resources best practices, employment legislation, and workplace relations

Excellent communication, interpersonal and stakeholder management skills

Ability to think strategically, problem-solve, and provide practical, solutions-focused advice

Proficient in HR systems and data management

Collaborative team player with a strong customer service orientation
