About the Position

Our client is seeking a Senior Associate or Special Counsel to join their Sydney-based General Insurance practice. The team is one of the largest in Australia and is well-regarded for its expertise across health professions, care sectors and complex liability disputes.

This role will focus on medical malpractice litigation, coronial inquests, and disciplinary proceedings, alongside broader public liability and professional indemnity matters. You will manage your own caseload of significant, often catastrophic claims, while also mentoring junior lawyers and contributing to client development initiatives.

This is a rare opportunity for a senior practitioner to step into a supportive, national team with a deep pipeline of work and the autonomy to shape their practice.

Key Responsibilities

• Defend medical negligence claims and manage catastrophic injury matters
• Advise clients on liability, causation, contribution and quantum issues
• Represent healthcare professionals in coronial inquests and disciplinary matters
• Act on public liability and professional indemnity disputes
• Mentor and supervise junior lawyers within the team
• Contribute to client relationship management and business development

Key Requirements

• Minimum 6 years PAE in defendant insurance litigation
• Strong experience in medical negligence claims essential
• Exposure to disciplinary matters or dust disease litigation advantageous
• Proven ability to manage complex caseloads independently
• Strong client management and business development skills
• Leadership qualities with an interest in mentoring junior lawyers
• Clear and concise legal drafting with excellent attention to detail
