About the role
Somerville is seeking a motivated Graduate Accountant to join our Darwin-based finance team, supporting the delivery of accurate and compliant financial operations across the organisation. Reporting to the Finance Manager, this role will provide hands-on experience in financial processing, reporting, budgeting, and compliance, while contributing to the continuous improvement of our systems and practices. It is an excellent opportunity for a recent accounting graduate to develop their skills and grow their career within a supportive, community-focused organisation.
What you’ll be doing
As a Graduate Accountant, you will work closely with the Senior Accountant and Finance Manager to support the delivery of accurate and compliant financial services across Somerville.
Key responsibilities include:
Processing daily bank entries, receipts, and monthly reconciliations for two entities, ensuring accuracy and resolving discrepancies.
Verifying revenue receipts, prepare general ledger reconciliations, and assist with monthly journals and financial reports, including participant reporting.
Supporting end-of-month and end-of-year processes by preparing documentation, verifying balances, and assisting with statutory reporting (e.g., BAS, ABS).
Maintaining efficient accounts payable processes, liaise with suppliers, and support payroll and NDIS billing as required.
Assisting with audit preparation and provide leave coverage for key finance functions.
Collaborating with operational teams to ensure timely processing of purchase orders and financial requests.
Contributing to process improvements while ensuring confidentiality, compliance, and adherence to policies.
Participating in meetings, training, and undertake other duties as directed.
What you’ll bring

You’ll also need to demonstrate:
That you have Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (completed or near completion).
Practical understanding of accounting principles, including reconciliations, financial reporting, and accurate record-keeping.
Experience or ability to process financial transactions with accuracy and attention to detail.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a commitment to producing high-quality work.
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and familiarity with accounting/finance systems, with the ability to quickly adapt to new software.
Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain financial information and work effectively with colleagues and stakeholders.
Strong organisational skills to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
Willingness to continue learning and developing professionally, including pursuing further accounting qualifications
Desirable
Previous practical experience in an accounting role (including internships or work placements).
Experience working in a not-for-profit, disability, or community services environment.
Knowledge of finance compliance requirements, such as BAS, PAYG, superannuation, and grant acquittals.
Interest in pursuing further professional qualifications such as CPA or CA.
Ability to work effectively in a culturally diverse environment with sensitivity and respect.
