Financial Controller - Project-Driven Mid-Sized Business - West Sydney
Fuse Recruitment
Posted 7 days ago
An exciting opportunity exists for a hands-on, business-savvy Financial Controller to join a rapidly growing, project-based organisation that has scaled from $10M to $100M in just two years. This is a key leadership role suited to someone who thrives in fast-paced, operational environments such as manufacturing, infrastructure, or construction — and who is looking to make a real impact across both finance and the broader business.
The Client:
An industry leader in integrated audiovisual solutions, this Australian-based manufacturing and installation company has been delivering professional services for over four decades. Specializing in sound, lighting, vision, and communication systems, it offers end-to-end solutions across design, installation, and ongoing support. With deep expertise in both fixed installations and live event services, the company operates extensively in sectors such as education, government, corporate, sports, and performing arts.
A strong focus on collaboration, safety, and customer satisfaction underpins its reputation as a trusted partner in complex infrastructure projects. Whether delivering permanent installations or supporting live events, the company brings together precision, experience, and a passion for excellence in every project.
For You:
- Fantastic Salary Package on offer
- Be part of a high-growth, entrepreneurial business with a collaborative culture
- Drive meaningful change, influence strategy, and be close to operations
- Great role for someone wanting to grow with a business and not just manage from the top
- Contribute to a business where finance is a key enabler, not a back-office function
About the Role:
You will take full ownership of the finance function, leading a small team while also overseeing IT and procurement. The role is not about sitting back and delegating — it’s about being in the business, building relationships, driving change, and enabling others through strong financial leadership and governance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and mentor the finance, procurement, and IT teams
- Own all aspects of financial governance, reporting, budgeting, and compliance
- Drive best-practice accounting, modernise processes, and improve systems
- Drive budgeting, forecasting, and business planning processes
- Oversee compliance, internal controls, insurance and OHS-related financial responsibilities
- Support project delivery with robust purchasing oversight and financial governance
- Identify and implement modern accounting practices and process improvements
- Partner closely with operational and project teams to support commercial decision-making
- Guide non-financial managers in budgeting and financial literacy
- Provide strategic input while remaining hands-on and detail-oriented
- Oversee procurement for projects, including long lead time management
- Manage insurance, OHS financial claims, and premiums
- Champion financial reporting through MS Dynamics 365 (Project Stream module)
Your First 3–6 Months:
- Learn the systems, processes, and people — no urgent fires to put out
- Build relationships across the business and understand how the projects and operations run
- Begin refining controls and processes, and contributing to strategic conversations
- Start coaching operational leaders on budgeting and financial accountability
Your Team Structure:
- 1 x Full-Time Accountant
- 2 x Part-Time AP/AR
- 2 x Procurement & Purchasing staff
- IT reports into this role
What We’re Looking For:
- CPA/CA qualified with a degree in accounting, finance or similar
- A proven Financial Controller (or strong Senior Finance Manager) with a track record in mid-sized, operationally focused businesses
- Experience in a project or contract delivery environment (e.g. manufacturing, construction, infrastructure)
- Proven experience managing not just Finance teams but IT and Procurement teams as well
- A true business partner who builds trust with operations while maintaining financial rigour
- Someone who brings ideas, initiative, and a continuous improvement mindset
- A finance leader who can teach, coach, and empower non-financial stakeholders
- Hands-on, curious, and commercially minded — not someone who manages from afar
- Comfortable growing with a scaling business (ideally has seen growth from $20M–$50M+)
- Experience with project-based finance systems
- Hands-on experience with insurance and financial risk management
- An aptitude for continuous improvement, best practice implementation, and clear communication
- Comfortable managing purchasing and working with long lead times
- Experience with ERP systems (MS Dynamics desirable)
