Posted 4 days ago
Please note, this position is an identified role whereby the incumbent identifies as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent pursuant to the exemption from the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (SA).
The Workforce and Training Coordinator (Elder Care) position is a Full-Time 2-year fixed position.
The Aboriginal Health Council of South Australia Limited (AHCSA) is the peak body representing Aboriginal community-controlled health and substance misuse services in South Australia at state and national levels.
Our primary role is to be the ‘health voice’ for all Aboriginal people in South Australia. We achieve this by advocating for the community and supporting workers through our Member Services with appropriate Aboriginal health programs based on a holistic perspective of health.
AHCSA is participating in the Elder Care Support Program, an Australian government initiative designed to build a workforce that supports older First Nations people, their families, and carers in accessing aged care services that meet both their physical and cultural needs.
The program aims to increase workforce capability and capacity within community-controlled aged care support, empowering the community-controlled sector to address place-based aged care needs. This initiative is funded to develop a workforce of 250 FTE staff across Australia, providing essential support to older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
The Australian government has allocated funding through the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO) to roll out the program, with funding provided to identified Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHS) and Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs) to appoint Elder Care Support Connectors to deliver Elder care support to their communities. AHCSA is funded to provide specialised training and support to the Elder care connectors and other staff involved in the delivery of Elder care support services, and general support and advocacy for delivery of the program within South Australia.
Broad Summary of the Role
The Workforce and Training Coordinator (Coordinator) plays a crucial role in supporting South Australia’s Elder care Support workforce to deliver culturally respectful, safe, and effective services to Elders and older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in local communities.
This includes delivering a suite of non-accredited training to Elder Care Support Connectors and other relevant staff, ensuring training is responsive to the needs of the community and staff are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to deliver culturally respectful and safe care.
The Coordinator is also responsible for proactively supporting the Elder care support workforce, through the provision of mentoring, information and other useful resources. This includes coordinating yarning circles and participating in a workforce community of practice to explore service improvements and foster continuous learning.
The position provides advocacy support to ensure that Elder care clients receive culturally safe care, and the needs of the Elder care support workforce are being met. It advocates on relevant issues within the aged care landscape, including the rights and wellbeing of older people, and ensures that culturally safe and trauma-informed practices underpin all aspects of care delivery.
The position works closely with AHCSA’s Registered Training Organisation (RTO) to coordinate training and collaborates with NACCHO and other stakeholders to support and enhance the program’s delivery.
