About the role
Good Shepherd Catholic College, Mount Isa is seeking an experienced and dedicated School Officer - Assisting Student Learning (Engineering). This role is a term time, permanent position completing 30 hours per week commencing 19 January 2026.
The primary purpose of the School Officer - Assisting Student Learning is to contribute to the provision of a quality educational service by collaborating with teachers and student support services to provide support and guidance which assists students in their learning and development. The School Officer - Assisting Student Learning provides efficient and high-quality support to teachers with the preparation and/or enhancement of learning materials for learning and teaching and ensure all duties are completed to an acceptable standing as determined by the classroom teacher, student support services and Principal.
Typical Duties
Workshop and Equipment Maintenance
Maintain workshop equipment
Help teachers and students maintain neat and tidy workshop environments
Check and top up oil levels in machinery
Help keep battery tools recharged
Empty sawdust in hoppers, bags and keep offcuts neat
Safety checks on machinery and log repairs
Assist in safety compliance e.g. safety signage and tags
Regularly sharpen drills, plane blades, bevel-edged chisels and lathe chisels.
Materials and Consumables
Accept delivery and store materials in racks, including plastics, timber and metal
Pre-cut and store project materials for designated year levels
Collect goods from local suppliers
Setup and assist classroom teachers prior to class where necessary
Ensure all rooms have full glue bottles, varnish pots, wax and precut sandpaper
Ensure lathes and miller have coolant and swarth trays are cleaned periodically
Conduct annual stocktake.
Assist the student’s learning and participation in the College
Assist teachers in preparing, implementing and supervising learning programs
Be aware of the Classroom Teacher’s expectations of the students in the class and work with the teacher, actively participating in activities, intervening and encouraging students where appropriate
Assist individuals or small groups, with activities as part of inclusive teaching and learning practices
Assist students with their personal organisation when required
Respond to all students in the classroom in a warm and encouraging manner and build collaborative relationships with the students and respond to individual learning needs.

The ability to organise and prioritise a range of tasks and set priorities to meet deadlines in a busy environment.
Demonstrated competence and confidence in using a personal computer and relevant software packages e.g. Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
Demonstrated experience working with students with disabilities and/or special needs is desirable.
Mandatory Criteria
Current paid Working with Children Blue Card (or ability to obtain prior to commencement, per No Card, No Start legislation)
Current driver’s licence
Understanding of health and safety regulations and procedures.
Willingness and capacity to travel within the Diocese, as required
Physically capable of performing the role safely
Desirable Criteria
A background working with timber/steel/sheet metal
Knowledge and experience of contemporary and computer aided Design and Manufacturing tools, equipment and materials
