The Role

You’ll design, build and maintain the systems that make Explorate’s platform work, ensuring scalability, performance, and impact.

We’re after someone who has a strong track record in creating backend solutions written in JavaScript or TypeScript under node.js. While experience with JavaScript on the front end would be nice to have as well, the key focus for this role will be helping us build reliable, performant and secure systems - so if you have a history software development which features building APIs, working with databases, creating integrations, profiling code, and finding memory leaks, we want to hear from you.

You’ll be responsible for:

Designing and implementing new features and systems

Maintaining and optimising backend performance and scalability

Troubleshooting and resolving technical issues in a large codebase

Conducting code reviews and mentoring junior developers

Collaborating with Product, Design and Ops to align technical delivery with business needs

Supporting a culture of continuous improvement and learning

Skills/Qualifications:

6-7 years of web development experience, with at least 4 years experience creating node.js backend solutions

Proficient in software performance optimisation techniques, including database query and code profiling, diagnosing memory leaks, caching and load testing

Solid understanding of system architecture principles and scalability considerations to design and develop solutions that can handle increasing demands with growing user bases

Knowledge of testing methodologies and frameworks to ensure the quality and reliability of the software and a commitment to ongoing continual improvement of testing processes

Comfortable working within a large code base to identify, triage, debug and fix issues and bugs, sometimes with limited information

Leadership skills and the ability to guide and mentor junior developers, providing support, sharing knowledge, and fostering their professional growth

Even Better:

Familiarity with Express.js, Sequelize and other backend frameworks

Experience with TypeScript and tooling

Comfortable writing tests using Jest, PlayWright, or other testing frameworks

Familiarity with Vue.js, or other frontend frameworks

Developed within AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, or other cloud-based environments

Working knowledge of Linux

Experience and passion for Continuous Improvement and CD/DevOps

Deep understanding about security issues in software design and development

Work experience at a rapidly growing startup

Contributed to Open Source projects

Bachelor’s or higher degree in Computer Science or related field
