Part-time Male Aboriginal Elder/Mentor, Clerk Grade 5/6

Balund-a Program, Tabulam

Salary: $97,027 - $107,059 pa plus superannuation and leave loading, pro rata

Position Type: Ongoing, Part Time (rostered 3 days/2 days alternate weeks)

About the Balund-a Program

Corrective Services NSW runs the state's correctional centres, supervises offenders in the community, delivers programs to reduce reoffending and supports reintegration to build safer communities.

The Balund-a Program is a residential centre that sits within the Work & Education stream under Reintegration. It is a non-custodial innovative residential diversionary program for male offenders over 18 years of age.

It is located near Tabulam on Wahlabul country, within the Bundjalung Nation. The program's aim is to reduce re-offending and enhance living and employment skills within a cultural and supportive community environment. The Aboriginal name, Bugilmah Burube Wullinje Balund-a translates as "Be good now you have a second chance down by the river".

Your role

To provide specialist, culturally specific advice on the development and delivery of Aboriginal programs and encourage offender participation.

To assist in developing and maintaining lines of communication with community, government and non-government organisations regarding issues associated with offending behaviour.

What you'll do

As part of the Mentor/Elder role, working alongside other Elders, you be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

  • Providing culturally specific advice and support, to both residents and the team.
  • Developing and delivering culturally specific programs and activities.
  • Identifying and building community networks and partnerships to improve the service delivery onsite and the reintegration support available to residents when returning to community.
  • Contribute to case management, including assessment and support of residents.
  • Act as a resource to the manager and leadership team to develop effective culturally appropriate offender program delivery.

What we're looking for

Someone with

  • Previous experience in cultural mentoring and/or program delivery will be highly regarded.
  • Previous experience and respect for working within local Aboriginal protocols.
  • Note; this is a male designated role.

Essential criteria

  • Proof of Aboriginality
  • Current NSW driver's license and preparedness to drive a vehicle in the course of performing the role, preferably LR licence
