Your role at St John of God Midland Hospital
The Community midwife practices within a small team of Aboriginal Health Liaison Officers predominantly in the community setting. They will provide continuity of midwifery care to Aboriginal women within a caseload model throughout the continuum of pregnancy and the post-partum period.

Emphasis is on the provision of safe, effective, culturally sensitive antenatal and post-natal care and education, which is in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, the individual client, and her family.

The Position

  • Apply Community Midwives practice according to the ANMC National Competency standards for the Midwife, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia Code of Professional Conduct and Code of Ethics, the ACM National Midwifery guidelines for Consultation and Referral and SJGHC policies.
  • Complies with policies and guidelines that have legal and professional implications for practice.
  • Formulates documentation according to SJG Midland Hospital standards and legal and professional guidelines.
  • Demonstrates and acts upon knowledge of legislation and common law pertinent to midwifery practice.
  • Recognises and acts within own knowledge base and scope of practice.
  • Identifies unsafe practice and takes appropriate action.
  • Consults with, and refers to, SJG Midland Public and Private Hospitals Midwifery Manager, midwife, or appropriate health care provider when the needs of the woman and her baby fall outside own scope of practice or competence.
  • Ensures midwifery practice is culturally safe.
  • Is aware of and works in accordance with SGJHC policies and procedures, including Equal Employment Opportunity, Confidentiality and Privacy.
  • Advocates to protect the rights of women, families, and communities in relation to maternity care.
  • Plans and provides, safe and effective midwifery care.
  • Applies knowledge, skills, and attitudes to enable woman centred care.
  • Communicates effectively with the woman, her family, and friends.
  • Provides learning opportunities appropriate to the woman's needs.
  • Plans and evaluates care in partnership with the woman.

Position Requirements
You will be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a Registered Midwife with demonstrated knowledge and experience relating to Aboriginal health and culture in Australia, as well as midwifery-led, woman centred models of care. You will have a high level of communication skills with a proven commitment to quality improvement activities and client service provision. A current C class driver's license is essential.

To succeed you will have knowledge of relevant acts, codes, and standards relevant to current practice, are able to plan, assess and develop team and individual performance, with a demonstrated commitment to personal ongoing education and professional development. Ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team is vital.

  • Salary: $104,903 to $110,954 pro rata, plus 12% superannuation
  • 2 Permanent part time positions available, working 30.4 hours per fortnight
