An opportunity is now available for a passionate and driven Research Officer to join a landmark Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) project:

“A ‘whole-of-setting’ model of care for trans and gender diverse people in prison.”

This is an opportunity to drive meaningful change where you’ll be part of a supportive and inclusive team working to implement prison health and custodial policy reforms. We strongly encourage applications from trans and gender diverse people, especially those with an in depth understanding or professional experience of correctional facilities or incarcerated people.

What you'll do

This unique project aims to develop and evaluate an integrated, culturally responsive model of care that supports the health, wellbeing, and physical safety of trans and gender diverse people in correctional facilities. Through building an evidence base and centering lived experience, this work will support much-needed prison health and policy reform.

As part of Phase 1 of the project—Establishing the Evidence Base—you will:

  • Conduct literature reviews, policy analyses, and qualitative data collection, including lived experience interviews/focus groups.
  • Coordinate project activities, including workshops, meetings, and reporting.
  • Support ethical approvals and risk management.
  • Engage with key stakeholders and contribute to research publications and dissemination.
  • Present findings at relevant conferences and workshops.

What will help you succeed

  • A relevant tertiary qualification.
  • Demonstrated experience with qualitative research methods (focus groups/interviews), policy analyses, and/or co-design work with vulnerable communities.
  • Experience working with a range of computer systems and applications, including MS Office, MS Teams or Zoom, and NVivo.
  • Proven project experience, with an understanding of the full project lifecycle including the development of project plans, setting objectives and preparing essential documentation.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills and sensitivity when working with trans and gender diverse people, including those an in depth understanding or professional experience of correctional facilities or incarcerated people.
  • A collaborative, values-driven approach with excellent time management and communication skills, including the ability to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
  • Demonstrated experience contributing to and publishing peer-reviewed journal articles.

Salary: Total part-time (0.6FTE) remuneration range $65,135 to $70,544 pa (includes salary range of $54,931 to $59,493 pa, employer super contributions of 17% and annual leave loading)
