Why Marthakal Homelands Health Service?
MHHS, situated on Galiwin'ku (Elcho Island), is a mobile Yolngu Medical Service covering 15,000 square kilometres in remote East Arnhem Land with a population around 300. There are 29 homelands in the Marthakal Homelands region, for which the medical service is on 24 hours emergency call. Being a mobile medical service means that the health team travels in small planes and manual four-wheel drive vehicles to conduct clinics out on the homelands. What medical equipment cannot be packed can't be taken, so compact sturdy anti shock equipment is used.

What's it like living in Galiwin'ku (Elcho Island)?
The advantages of living and working in remote East Arnhem Land are varied and interesting and provide a pathway to develop skills in chronic disease, tropical medicine, Aboriginal health, and rural health, which could not be experienced in other regions of Australia. You are able to enhance your emergency medicine skills, whilst contributing to improved health outcomes for the Marthakal Homelands region. The challenges are as diverse as the landscape, but the opportunities to achieve your professional and lifestyle goals are immense.
