WE FIT UP THE BIG RIGS! From design, fabrication, to fitting up all the cool stuff on Prime Movers – Head Board Frames, Super Duty Guard Sets, Tool Boxes, Oil Tanks. You name it, we offer it! K-Drive brings our customers’ dreams to life by custom-building their (mostly brand-new) Prime Movers. We work with all the big names – Kenworth, Mack, Volvo, Scania, MAN – and the list keeps growing.
Join our passionate, tight-knit team and help us build a legacy one truck at a time. At the heart of every K-Drive build is precision engineering and well-thought-out design. That’s where you come in.
As our Mechanical Designer, you'll play a critical role in turning customer ideas into real-world, build-ready solutions. You’ll work closely with our engineers, sales team, and workshop crew to ensure every truck leaves our yard fit for purpose, compliant, and looking sharp.
The Role:
- Convert customer concepts into detailed, functional designs that meet Australian Standards & ADRs
- Create and revise 3D CAD models and fabrication drawings using SolidWorks, focusing on sheet metal and custom vehicle components
- Generate clear, buildable engineering drawings and BOMs (Bills of Materials)
- Conduct manual take-offs and reverse engineer components as required (occasional site visits)
- Collaborate with sales, engineering, and fabrication teams to resolve design issues quickly
- Provide technical support to the workshop team during builds and fittings
- Maintain up-to-date drawing templates, model libraries, part numbers, and revision records
- Support quality assurance and compliance documentation
- Balance multiple drawing tasks to meet production schedules and client deadlines
The Requirements:
- Diploma or Certificate in Mechanical Engineering, Drafting, or related field
- 3+ years’ experience in a drafting or mechanical design role within automotive, manufacturing, or fabrication
- Advanced SolidWorks skills, particularly in sheet metal and assemblies (PDM experience preferred)
- Confident creating and managing technical drawings, BOMs, and documentation standards
- Strong understanding of fabrication techniques, tolerancing, and Australian vehicle standards
- High attention to detail with a strong drive for accuracy and quality
- Excellent communication skills to work with both technical and workshop teams
- Organised, self-motivated, and able to juggle priorities in a fast-paced environment
