About the role
As the Solicitor in Charge (Grade VI) at Broken Hill, you will lead and manage the regional office to ensure efficient operations and the delivery of high-quality legal services to clients and the community.

You will supervise legal and administrative staff, foster a positive workplace culture, and provide expert legal advice and representation in complex matters as priorities allow.

You will also build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders—including the private profession, legal assistance providers, and the courts—while representing Legal Aid NSW within the local community.

About you
The successful applicant will be an experienced lawyer with strong leadership and management skills, capable of balancing a busy legal practice with office supervision and strategic planning. You will have experience handling complex legal matters, a commitment to high-quality client service, and the ability to engage effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders.

Management experience is essential, along with a demonstrated ability to mentor and develop staff, drive service improvements, and promote a collaborative team environment.

We may use this recruitment to create a talent pool for ongoing or temporary vacancies we have over the next 18 months.

Broken Hill is one of NSW's most remote cities and the first to be heritage listed. With a population of around 17,000 and servicing a number of local areas Broken Hill is the hub for many smaller local communities. Located approximately 1,114km from Sydney, 500km from Adelaide and 300km from Mildura and serviced by Regional Express Airlines and Qantas, Broken Hill is also only 48km from the South Australian Border. Made famous by immortalisation in a number of Australian films, Broken Hill is renowned for heritage and culture in a remote setting.

The Broken Hill office of Legal Aid NSW services Broken Hill, Wilcannia, Wentworth and surrounding areas. The office has four full time experienced criminal lawyers, three fulltime family lawyers, two full time civil lawyers and a number of administration staff as well as welcoming a range of visiting lawyers from all over NSW delivering local services including Legal Aid specialist services such as Family Law Services for Aboriginal Communities and Civil Law Services for Aboriginal Communities.

The essential requirements for this role

You must:

  • be admitted or be eligible for admission as a legal practitioner in NSW
  • be able to provide a current NSW Practising Certificate before you start work with us
  • be willing to do a Criminal Record Check and/ or Working with Children Check
  • hold Australian or NZ citizenship, Australian Permanent Residency (for ongoing vacancies) or a valid visa to work in Australia (for temporary vacancies)
  • Hold a valid Driver Licence and the ability to travel including overnight travel

Lead and manage a remote, multi-practice, office to ensure team wellbeing and the efficient and effective use of resources to deliver high-quality services that meet the needs of clients in the Far West.

Develop key relationships with internal and external stakeholders including the private profession, legal assistance providers and the courts in the Far West community.
