St Michael's Catholic School, Palm Island is a co-educational Catholic primary school on Palm Island, offering Prep to Year 6. Established in 1938, the school enjoys magnificent ocean views and natural surroundings including a creek, green hills and beachfront. The Sisters of Our Lady Help of Christians opened the school and later the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary Sisters took charge, remaining on the island until 2011. Their mission 'Truth by Love,' remains the school’s motto. St Michael's Catholic School exists to serve the community's Indigenous people, with the majority of students being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent.

About the role

St Michael's Catholic School, Palm Island is seeking an experienced and dedicated Facilities Manager to commence in 25 August 2025 or (as soon as practical). This is a Full Time, Permanent position.

The Facilities Manager plans, co-ordinates, supervises processes and is actively involved in the maintenance and development of grounds, buildings, vehicle fleet, plant and equipment. The role also incorporates the duties of College Workplace Health and Safety Officer and Fire Safety Adviser, under the guidance and support from Townsville Catholic Education Office (TCEO).

Key Accountabilities

Maintenance and Grounds

Respond to requests for maintenance and repairs, including preventative maintenance -This will require some hands-on work where required and within skill set.

Attend to maintenance/grounds tasks required to ensure buildings and facilities are in working order

Ensure that all building, plant and equipment and maintenance priorities are completed in a timely and efficient manner

Ensure all facilities management projects align with organisational objectives

Attend to regular monitoring and testing of all school buildings, staff housing & plant and equipment to ensure compliance with relevant safety standards and legislative requirements in conjunction with the school Principal & TCEO Maintenance Officer.

Monitor and implement preventive and protective maintenance programs for buildings, plant, and equipment (e.g., painting programs) in conjunction with the school Principal & TCEO Maintenance Officer.

Liaise with maintenance, building and security contractors

Prepare detailed reports and updates on building and maintenance projects for stakeholders

Generate Purchase Requisitions in the TCE finance system for all maintenance works and submit for approval and close out on completion of works

Supervise maintenance and grounds staff to ensure upkeep of school & housing facilities

Follow up on ongoing works to ensure completion in appropriate timeframes

Facilitate responses to queries regarding capital applications and other building projects

Regular inspection of the school and housing facilities to identify areas that require attention

Meet regularly with the school maintenance, grounds and cleaning staff

Meet regularly with the school Principal to ensure that the presentation of the school grounds and gardens is consistently maintained at the necessary standard

Manage budget spending within delegated approval levels, in consultation with the Principal & TCEO Maintenance Officer

Maintain communication with the TCEO Maintenance Accommodation and Sustainability Officer, regarding compliance issues, and request assistance if necessary

Liaise with approved hirers of facilities when necessary in conjunction with the Principal (i.e. after hour activities).

Accommodation

Carry out approved minor repairs and maintenance in accordance with current relevant qualifications and skill sets

Maintain communication with the TCEO Maintenance Accommodation and Sustainability Officer, and seek approval prior to carrying out or arranging building works or repairs

Vehicle Fleet

Arrange regular inspections of the fleet of vehicles to ensure roadworthiness and compliance in accordance with the Department of Transport and Main Roads

Ensure the fleet vehicles are regularly serviced and repaired

Ensure that the vehicles are scheduled to meet the transportation needs of the school and allocated to appropriately licensed drivers

Monitor that vehicles are cleaned and ready for use and securely garaged

Maintain records and registers as required to ensure compliance with Bus Operators Accreditation and other relevant legislation in conjunction with the school principal.

Coordinating staffing for the transportation of students to various venues, as required.

Workplace Health and Safety

Participate as a member of the school Workplace Health and Safety and Fire Safety Committee

Conduct periodic workplace audits under the guidance and direction of TCEO

Attend to any instances of noncompliance and ensure corrective action is taken. Ensure the school Leadership Team is aware of any significant or persistent breaches of compliance

Investigate and complete Accident / Incident reports and forward to TCEO.

About you

Experience

Demonstrated experience in maintenance and mechanical repairs as well as an ability to interpret the need for tradespeople to be engaged

Demonstrated experience in planning, prioritising and undertaking grounds, buildings, fleet, plant and equipment maintenance

Demonstrated supervisory experience.

Knowledge

Knowledge and ability to interpret the need for tradespeople to be engaged.

Skills

Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality

Demonstrated ability to plan and prioritise work and meet regular deadlines

An ability to communicate with a range of employees across primary and secondary school settings

A demonstrated ability to develop and sustain productive working relationships.
